There's a lot more to say, but we can skip to the end: JS-first development is, in the main, classist and elitist.
There are pockets doing it better -- including some that are downright exceptional in their inclusion -- but they are the exception today.
We need to sit with that.

Making a site with Next at any point in the last decade has been a terrible idea if you weren't actively working to turn certain buyers away.

Why, you might ask, is there a reasonable complete subset of the IANA timezone database [1] being downloaded in the critical path of a food ordering website?
Inconsiderate development. Rudeness.
I've likened this to stores hiring anti-greeters; bouncers to tackle poor-looking users and prevent them from entering, rather than welcoming them. Might work selling Prada handbags, but Veblen goods [2] are a small fraction of the economy.

Was trawling through a Superfund-worth trace from another high profile Next.js site, and realised that the best way to describe contemporary frontend is **inconsiderate**.
That is, nobody considered the consequences of their choices, including now-pervasive inattention to users on the margins.
Devs don't *mean* to do a terrible job (although that's the result), it's just that nobody is looking where they're going, and when the crash happens, Karen-style blame-shifting takes over.

I don't think I've ever needed to do a "no spoilers!!" warning before about a talk, but if you can go into this cold, do

What I wrote back in March:
#Threads is built on #Instagram. Instagram has an API. #Meta, then #Facebook, literally invented GraphQL. They’re not building an API. They’re building a fucking federation protocol lol.

Thought— The concepts of federation and decentralization can be complimentary, but are not interchangeable.
Federation speaks to the ability to move between nodes— data, content, identities.
Decentralization speaks to power and authority over both tech and people.
I made this little social media compass to illustration the two concepts.
