@ricmac It's always hard to find the single thing that sparks a long project arc, but one input into the process was a doc I wrote that compared the performance of Chrome and Edge WebUI surfaces on low-end devices, *with video*.

It took at least another year to start in earnest, and a lot of switchbacks have been traveled since, but never, ever underestimate the power of a side-by-side video that can be forwarded with a link.

This project has been a long, slow build, enabled by people like Mohammed Mansour and Andrew Ritz and Lisa Klink amd Chris Holt and Justin Slone and dozens of others across several years.

The alliances necessary to put the user first aren't self-assembling, but with the right values and a little bit of "what if?", we can make better more and more possible.

@polotek @slightlyoff @fvsch feels like the issue is as you say a lack of empathy and social awareness. The solution to which is almost always collective action.

No individual unless very very senior can change the environment in companies that aren't putting users first. Collective action from an entire engineering team can.

But collective action starts with empathy, and social awareness and openness, the lack of which in many engineering teams is why we're in this situation to start with!

An ounce of good faith can make a world of difference.

Imagine, instead of scolding Black, Latino, and Arab voters for their hesitation in supporting Harris, white liberals all took to social media and said something like:

"My vote is for Harris, but I am not satisfied with the Democrats response to Police Reform/Immigration Human Rights/Palestinian Human Rights. So, I wrote a letter to the White House..."

Such a simple gesture would make the news. It would help us win. #HarrisWalz2024

There's a lot more to say, but we can skip to the end: JS-first development is, in the main, classist and elitist.

Making a site with Next at any point in the last decade has been a terrible idea if you weren't actively working to turn certain buyers away.

Why, you might ask, is there a reasonable complete subset of the IANA timezone database [1] being downloaded in the critical path of a food ordering website?

Inconsiderate development. Rudeness.

I've likened this to stores hiring anti-greeters; bouncers to tackle poor-looking users and prevent them from entering, rather than welcoming them. Might work selling Prada handbags, but Veblen goods [2] are a small fraction of the economy.

Was trawling through a Superfund-worth trace from another high profile Next.js site, and realised that the best way to describe contemporary frontend is **inconsiderate**.

That is, nobody considered the consequences of their choices, including now-pervasive inattention to users on the margins.

Devs don't *mean* to do a terrible job (although that's the result), it's just that nobody is looking where they're going, and when the crash happens, Karen-style blame-shifting takes over.
