(8) Updates LIVE: Deadly fire rips through tents after Israeli attack on Gaza hospital:

Heard about this from a TikTok mutual. When I went to search the source, I had to check dates because there were multiple hospital bombing stories. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/liveblog/2024/10/14/live-22-dead-80-wounded-as-israeli-army-shells-gaza-school-shelter

If you like it, subscribe using the form and I'll add you when the newsletter site is up.

Even if you don't sign up, I'd love any feedback. Still working on the newsletter's format and voice and all of that.

Man, I guess Wordpress.org just doesn’t want to be the place that people get their plugins from anymore. Replacing one codebase with another without the author or users’ consent is just a MITM attack. No one should host code there anymore if they want it to be trusted.

@graves501 @BlackAzizAnansi It's even worse in Win11. They auto-installed OneDrive and made it the system default Documents folder. Thankfully I'd never logged into microsoft services so nothing got uploaded. But I imagine lots of people's Documents folder got uploaded automatically. 😠

@ricmac It's always hard to find the single thing that sparks a long project arc, but one input into the process was a doc I wrote that compared the performance of Chrome and Edge WebUI surfaces on low-end devices, *with video*.

It took at least another year to start in earnest, and a lot of switchbacks have been traveled since, but never, ever underestimate the power of a side-by-side video that can be forwarded with a link.

This project has been a long, slow build, enabled by people like Mohammed Mansour and Andrew Ritz and Lisa Klink amd Chris Holt and Justin Slone and dozens of others across several years.

The alliances necessary to put the user first aren't self-assembling, but with the right values and a little bit of "what if?", we can make better more and more possible.

@polotek @slightlyoff @fvsch feels like the issue is as you say a lack of empathy and social awareness. The solution to which is almost always collective action.

No individual unless very very senior can change the environment in companies that aren't putting users first. Collective action from an entire engineering team can.

But collective action starts with empathy, and social awareness and openness, the lack of which in many engineering teams is why we're in this situation to start with!
