Threads is Mark Zuckerberg's magnum opus of toxic social media platforms.
The spectacular fashion in which everyone fell for it again; the way the popular kids of the tech community sold us out—all the apologist think pieces, the gaslighting, the doublespeak—it's truly remarkable.

The much simpler, much more fundamentally interesting thing that I think showed in everything that we did was that we built for ourselves. We had taste. We cared about the experience.

We were developers and we built what we wanted in order to enable how we wanted to ideally work. We were the only tool in the space built by developers for developers without PMs or accountants or CEOs trying to optimize for revenue rather than for developer experience.

re: USPol takes today

its fair to critique Kamala's campaign (always important when you lose by wide margins) but it is *the Democratic Party machine* that

  1. put Biden in by orchestrating a 2020 coalition to stop Sanders

  2. promised Joe would be a one term president

  3. ran Biden a second time without a primary while hiding the 2024 cognitive issues we were all yelling about back in 2020

so its not just Harris's mistake (there were some), or Biden's hubris. the failures are systemic

Fascism is a machine. All machines have moving parts. You don't attack the reinforced bits. And fascism, specifically, is a machine built to kill. When you take up the same arms, you're attacking them where they're strongest.

So, when you plan your resistance, unless you're a very rare sort--probably with preexisting military experience--don't plan for a violence that you can't and won't win.

Where are you finding hope today? Today, my class discussed public goods with network effects — goods that don't exclude people and that benefit everyone as more people access them. One of those things is education.

When my mother was born in the 1940s, around 70% of Americans over 25 didn't have a high school education. Now over 90% have finished high school.

That's an extraordinary expansion in human capability in a very short time period.

@fromjason yeah, I wrote a bit about this when I updated https://about.iftas.org/2024/10/29/5-ways-to-fight-election-disinformation-on-bluesky-and-the-fediverse/ :

"And if you’re tempted to share exit poll information, remember that it frequently turns out to be wrong, especially when looking at non-white demographics. Both in 2016 and 2020, for example, more detailed analysis eventually revealed significant errors with initial estimates of Latino votes. The framing itself is often misleading, for example not distinguishing between Latino voters of different races and nationalities. And there are significant differences between states, so be extra wary of exit polling diagrams that don’t specify whether they’re at the state level (and if so what state) or national. "
