I’ve read that phrase more in the last two weeks than perhaps in my lifetime. So much so that I lost its meaning and needed to look it up.

To say someone was killed “in cold blood” means it was done without emotion, in a calculated manner. I can’t think of anything more emotionless and calculating than budgeting death for faceless shareholders. Can you?

However, a part of me wonders if Apple executives are purposely tanking Apple Intelligence to mold public perceptions that AI is a trash technology. For years now, I have responded to review requests from Elsevier journals with a friendly explanation of why I cannot in good conscience devote my free labour to their for-profit venture. I always include an out: make some work in the same journal available in open access. Somehow they always find this isn't possible 🤷

I cannot in good conscience devote my efforts to corporate behemoths like Elsevier, whose profit margins have exceeded those of Big Tech for most years in the past decade due in no small part to their exploitative practices. I may be able to make an exception if you can make two articles of my choosing in this journal available in perpetual open access. One of them could be the reviewed work, should it be accepted for publication; but if it is rejected, I also consider opening up other paywalled work a reasonable compensation for my time and expertise.
