After Jan. 6, 2021, ProPublica sifted through thousands of videos taken by Parler users to create an immersive, first-person view of the Capitol riot as experienced by those who were there.

Somehow I did manage to get it down to 0 followers and following, which was a primary goal. It wasn't like that last month, so I'm not sure how that happened.

Need more galaxies in your feed? Of course you do.
Over the break I made @ArpBot, mostly because I thought the name "Arp Bot" was funny.
It posts an image of a galaxy in Halton Arp's Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies twice a day. Images are from the archives of professional observatories and the original 1966 catalog. I curated the images and wrote the image descriptions and most of the alt text.
Give it a follow!

- A grainy, black and white vertical image of two spiral galaxies next to each other. The galaxies are nebulous structures with denser arms shaped like spirals that meet at the centre of each galaxy. The galaxy at the bottom of the frame is face-on. The galaxy at the top of the frame is somewhat inclined, and they're almost touching. The image is sprinkled with white dots, which are stars. 4 years ago, I was locked down in the Capitol. When the majority of the Republicans voted to overturn the election AFTER the attack, something broke in Congress that still hasn’t healed. Truth is truth. And while it should never be partisan to defend democracy, we can’t pretend it isn’t.

Intel's Pentium processor (1993) can compute sines, logarithms, and other special functions. To do this, it has a ROM with 304 floating-point constants. I reverse-engineered this ROM and extracted the constants. You can see pi in the ROM, binary 11.001001..., encoded in the transistor pattern. 1/n

- A diagram showing how pi is encoded in the Pentium chip. The Pentium has a ROM to hold constants in the lower right. Zooming in on the ROM shows how it holds exponents in the left and the signficand in the right. Zooming in more shows the individual transistors in the ROM. Eight bits are indicated with arrows, the binary bits that start pi. (remote)

I have a written version of my high level video on doing floppy imaging from a flux perspective here: https://wiki.techtangents.net/wiki/Floppy_Disk_ImagingI have some specific information on HP 3.5in floppy formats on my page for the 9122C: https://wiki.techtangents.net/wiki/HP_9122C_Dual_1.44MB_Floppy_Drive
I haven't documented it on my wiki yet, but I do have a 4951C I've looked at in some streams: https://www.youtube.com/live/0ltWvh2y8RI
They are a pain because they have a serial on the disks to lock them to specific machines if I remember right.

The #Greaseweazle 4.1 arrived, and I'm looking forward to exploring a couple of floppy drives that I extracted from several devices.
Help is appreciated, but I'll start with the documentation.
Also, I kind of blame @TechTangents for putting this on my wish list. 😜

I will continue to leave the 2FA one-time-key handler (to make it move from PENDING to REAL_LIVE_USERS) *not* wired in until these seem adequate. next up after CREATE/UPDATE/DEACTIVATE: an “I forgot my password” handler.

at the point where I turn on user account self management, I think I’m ready to go “the beta is live” and try to get >=1000 users to sign up for a decent first “live” test.
creeping closer, hope to hit that by the end of this week: just 2 weeks past the ‘back of an envelope’ time estimate I made last JAN/FEB. IMHO that ain’t too bad for an olde farte who hasn’t done the production code planning dance for decades.

well, that was a reasonable morning’s work… log on (as “tester” / “password”) and hit the ‘Admin’ main menu choice and you get a page with tabbed panels for UPDATE email & UPDATE password & DEACTIVATE account. I *think* I got the validation & feedback logic into place, so email change button doesn’t go live until there is a valid one in there & password change button does not go live until there is a valid one typed in twice.
