Dunno, something about the "FreeOurFeeds" campaign is off. (https://freeourfeeds.com/)

It's basically trying to raise money for AT Proto so "the community" can standardize the thing and "build stuff" and they wanna run a second "relay" (which is the chokepoint that centralizes Bluesky ATM). I mean okay, but it feels a bit ... isn't that what the Bluesky Corporation wanted to enable/do? They already got millions in funding. Now some external entity collects more from people who for their investment get no stake in the corporation actually owning the whole thing...

The 9 custodians consist of a whole bunch of AI people, some Mozilla folks (same thing) and the director of the Social Web foundation. But the already existing standard ActivityPub is just an entry in the FAQ:
"ActivityPub is a W3C standard that enables interoperability between platforms like Mastodon, Flipboard, Ghost, Threads and others. AT and ActivityPub should not be either/or options. Our vision is that interoperability between open social media platforms is achieved through collaboration. This campaign can organize developer communities, fund product development, support testing that improves bridging and native protocol interoperability."

It can, but will it? Who knows?

It's just presented in a weird way with a whole lot of "give us a lot of money and we'll make amazing stuff happen" and in the end a bunch of AI grifters get some startups "that build upon AT proto" funded.

I would like to focus on the things about Mastodon that I have passion for, in a new, more product-oriented role, while leaving the business side of things to a new CEO. This is not immediate and will likely occur within the next 2-3 months.

It is not easy, and I feel a lot of conflicting emotions writing about it, because Mastodon is so tightly intertwined with my identity and my sense of self-worth. I dedicated 8 years of my life to this cause that I care deeply about, in a role that you can never disconnect from.

So, this has been in the works for a while, arguably most of last year. I intend to transfer my personal ownership of the Mastodon trademarks and assets, incl. copyright over my code, to the Mastodon non-profit, and transition to a different role at the organization.

Astronomers have long thought that the upper clouds of Jupiter, which create the planet’s iconic pale brown belts, are made of frozen ammonia.

But the joint efforts between an amateur astronomer with his backyard telescope 🔭 and professional scientists with ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT), have now shown that they're actually made of something completely different 😲

Most likely, they are made of ammonium hydrosulphide mixed with smog, although vertical convection can sometimes bring ammonia ice clouds to the top.

One of my favorite podcasts is Oxide and Friends by @bcantrill and @ahl. The episode on Intel after Gelsinger was excellent:

Bryan and Adam talk at length about deep cultural inertia at Intel and how it's stymied the company's efforts to maintain its leadership position in the market.

They make some interesting and very specific recommendations about how a new CEO ought to change the company to meet the moment.

By Gustav Klimt (1862–1918), Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907), oil, silver and gold on canvas, 140 × 140 cm (55.1 × 55.1 in), Neue Galerie, New York City. #arthistory

From the website: ‘This painting is revolutionary for both its timeless beauty and a provenance story that represents perseverance and justice. In 1938, the portrait was one of five Klimt paintings seized by the Nazis from the Bloch-Bauer's home. For decades, the masterpiece was displayed in Vienna where it was renamed “Woman in Gold” to conceal the sitter's identity. Over the course of decades, surviving heir Maria Altmann fought for the return of her family’s property.

In 2005, a panel hearing before the United States Supreme Court determined that the paintings were to be restituted to the heirs. This was a landmark restitution case. In 2006, Ronald S. Lauder acquired Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I for the Neue Galerie New York, and it has been on permanent view at the museum since, adhering to the wishes of the family.’
