Anyone who goes through my post history, knows I work for Meta (Facebook).

I am "Consumer Content Administrative Manager". My primary duties include content appeals, account appeals, account reviews, and some peer review.

It is no surprise that my job depends on people using Facebook. Today, I am going to suggest, you not do so. I can make that suggestion because we have a user base of billions, and I know most people would keep using Facebook even if the Devil ran the company. People are strange.

But if you feel you can truly live without Facebook, do so. Internally, things are changing, and not for the better. You should especially consider leaving Meta if you are a minority, woman, LGBTQ+, trans, or identify as progressive, politically. If facts matter to you, and misinformation is something you do not want to be subject toward, you should especially consider leaving, Facebook.

You have no privacy from Meta, while using Meta. None. I do not care if you believe you disabled a "feature" or "opt out" of something. You only seem to have done so. And even if you're going to continue to use Meta, uninstall the app (all of them). We collect data on you, even when you're not using the app.

#seattle voters should be receiving their ballots for the Feb 11 election this week. One of the most important items on the ballot is Seattle Prop 1A to tax wealthy businesses to fund social housing. Don't get fooled by Prop 1B which would rob affordable housing funds and was put forth by Seattle's conservative city council to avoid taxing the wealthy. Vote 1A!

I have been on Mastodon for over 5 years and I just now reported my first account. It is not that there haven't been other bad apples (especially in the past 2 years), but they are usually flagged before I need to. This one was harassing Native Americans and spreading lies about our culture, so it was probably not seen by most.

It is going to be even more difficult than usual for marginalized people moving forward, so if you are a privileged person please try to put your own existential crisis into perspective. We need your allyship and courage, not your personal displays. There are a lot of good people here, so I know you can redirect that energy in the right way.

Elevator pitch: five bucks a month buys you a tiny box with a lifetime data SIM, a battery, a serial port, and just enough smarts to set up a SSH tunnel to a remote server with email, irc, nntp, gopher, fedi, and a shell, (And maybe the Web and/or internet radio), all behind firewalls, adblockers, and a ton of countermeasures, wrapped in a code of conduct and aggressively opt-in federation.

I call it “The New Dialup”

(I should build something like this for myself, perhaps on the uConsole. But to have something like this largely available and easy to use, as an alternative to bloated broadband? What if CompuServe but Fediverse? FOL?)

I’m going to brag about myself for a brief moment because I need the positivity in my life right now.

Story time:

I am in my late 30’s and I’ve been back at University for a year. Yeah, it definitely has felt like I don’t fit in, but I’m determined to do this for myself. It’s been a lifelong dream and I finally have the accessibility supports I need to succeed as a person w/ ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia/Dysgraphia. Things have changed so much in that realm since I was college age and I’m super grateful for that.

So my humble brag? My GPA is 3.6! 💜 I’m so damn proud of that!! Given everything my physical body throws at me between POTS/MECFS and Rheumatoid Arthritis, I feel like I’m kicking ass and living my dream despite the uphill challenges.

So, that’s all. Celebrate your wins, friends! I absolutely want to hear all about them!! 🎉 🏆 📣 😃

with a bit of organization and a few handfuls of folks who were willing to volunteer to shoulder the effort to keep it up and running a group could set up a pretty massive e2ee overlay network with whatever peering rules the group wanted to enforce and drop all those services completely off the public facing net without using tor. lots of groups could do that. over and over. especially if the first group or two released some of their tooling to simplify their lives.

just saying.
