On top of that, we've all been coerced into carrying surveillance devices with us at all times. I have the dumbest possible phone I could find, and it is still too capable and allows powerful entities to easily know too much about me.

This post makes some good points about the current context:

But... We've never actually been far from this in my lifetime. These concerns don't seem to register for most of us.

I hope people get rid of their domestic surveillance devices disguised as a home assistant. But based on what I've seen of the people who have these, many people use it as a source of entertainment, especially for their kids. ("Alexa, play the space unicorn song!") But I suspect the ones I know never enabled the "Do Not Send Voice Recordings” option. So nothing has changed for them. They don't stay on top of the news regarding Amazon shenanigans:

A small sparrow looks up into the bare branches of a tree where a distant crow is perched. "Crows are so creepy," it says, "ominously perched in a dead tree...". The sparrow starts to see the crow with glowing eyes and jagged teeth, "who knows what they're up to...". The crow is now seen wearing strange occult symbols, a strange liquid drips from its eye, it is muttering something in an eerie and unknown language. "Conjuring demons?" the sparrow continues postulating, "Human worship? Rodent necromancy?" The crow is now seen as a normal crow, and the sparrow is right beside it, looking at it, and says: "Teach me your ways"

@pluralistic an older example of the same thing: to be gay in the 1970s, in many countries you had to think you knew better than the health authorities, who believed this was an illness you should try to cure.

and then, a couple of years later, the same health authorities ask you to believe that there's a dangerous illness going around that somehow mysteriously requires gay people to limit their sex lives.

knowing which scientific claims to trust is _very hard_.
