And no, they weren’t deported. Citizens can’t be. They were TRAFFICKED.

Beloved programming community: many of you are hearing about the US DoJ threatening Wikipedia.
Some of you are thinking of ways to thwart this. Download the Wikipedia dumps, put it on IPFS or hand-couriered USB drives or other less-censorable systems.
A good impulse, but missing the point.
Wikipedia is not just a big document or a software artifact.
Its true value is that it is effortlessly available to a wide audience, can be updated rapidly, with no preconditions to view or edit.

@adam Shame is a product of either accountability (when it’s driven by community) or conviction (when it comes from inside the person). It’s a force that allows us to grow into being better humans. Is it uncomfortable? Yeah. If it wasn’t we wouldn’t grow. Should it be tossed? Only if you are bent on maintaining your power & privilege.

@adam Accountability is the bedrock of safety in any community. If power & privilege refuse it for themselves, those without p & p will never be safe. Back to the original point: I’m not going to let fascists into our community, period. I understand that having dinner with a fascist might be a valid way to change their heart, but that would be *my* choice to do, individually, and not something to which I would subject an entire community. To revisit the earlier example from Brandon’s post, the F3 leader should absolutely have dinner with a member of the Proud Boys if he wants, but he shouldn’t make the other people in the group do it too.

If you find yourself feeling shame about something, maybe the most constructive approach isn’t to encourage behaviors that shield yourself or others from that feeling, but rather to lean into it. To explore what happened and then consider how to right the wrong that’s behind it. Every mistake is a chance to learn and grow.

As for the whole section about shame and exclusion, I’m struggling to understand exactly what he’s trying to say. That harmful people with unjust views shouldn’t be excluded from things? I disagree. People should be excluded from wherever they’re not welcome.
As for shame: shame isn’t something that someone *does* to you; shame is what you *feel* when you know that you’ve done something wrong. If someone points out that you’ve done something wrong, it’s just that: pointing to a problem.
