So the whole point of Signal is that it doesn't store client messages on the server, making it pointless for hackers/governments to steal/require any data from it.
Trump's goons didn't use Signal. They used a fork. Which does archive messages on the server, thus completely negating the Signal's advantage. Making it possible to hack and steal. Which is, apparently, what did happen: https://www.404media.co/the-signal-clone-the-trump-admin-uses-was-hacked/

apparently fosstodon has some kind of a "no politics" policy in place? that's a very big warning sign!
to see why, i suggest watching "How to Radicalize a Normie" from The Alt-Right Playbook.
if you're super pressed for time, begin watching at 8:35 and stay until 12:30.
that part of the video explains very clearly how having a "contained" fascist on the mod team is still part of an effective recruitment strategy, and why the way mike (the instance owner) is acting now is a sign that the strategy is working.
but i REALLY think you should watch the whole video, because it explains not just what communities with "no politics"-style policies does for the alt-right (the "no controversy" kind that gets you a warning for saying trans lives matters), but also the rest of the alt-right radicalisation pipeline that those communities are part of.

@soller When I got warned for stating trans lives matter, I knew it was time to bail on Fosstodon, my first home on Fedi. The "no politics" stance of theirs was always farcical, but now it is completely untenable.

So much of the destruction in the USA is away from the spotlight at grass roots level. But the foundations of a modern society are being smashed. The National Science Foundation has just stopped awarding new grants and funding existing ones. That effectively means that work on all existing NSF grants has to stop immediately. Universities are telling researchers to stop spending on those grants right away. That's jobs and progress and opportunity just being eradicated.

Speaking of Apple Pay, what’s the deal with American chatter about whether a particular brick&mortar retailer supports Apple Pay? AFAICT in Europe, if a retailer supports NFC, it supports Apple Pay (and Google Pay). (Though a phone doesn’t physically fit in some misdesigned Swedish vending machines.)
Do Americans just not care about NFC generally and “supports Apple Pay” means “supports NFC”, or is Apple Pay support really decoupled from NFC-on-card-shaped-thing support in the U.S.?

The article also confirms my suspicion that this modified Signal app called TM SGNL sends at least parts, if not all intercepted traffic to a central server/service run by TeleMessage before sending it onwards, where they are accessible seemingly unencrypted, which by itself is a huge breach of confidentiality, IMHO. I really hope that the Signal developers add a feature VERY soon that warns users when their chat partners use such a non-official app.
