There is still a little freight train action in San Francisco. Down by Pier 70-92 there are some industrial train users, and while it's rare to see trains on the old railroad tracks, they usually come through once or twice a week.

Apparently earlier today, though, a driver wasn't paying attention and either crashed into a train or was parked partially on the tracks... not exactly sure, we came upon this a bit after the fact around noon today.

No idea how it happened, any ideas @burritojustice @TelstarLogistics

It’s kind of interesting to play with! I made a little playground and you can also download all the fonts I made there: https://aresluna.org/pixel-fonts/

If any Mastodon instances are having trouble with their costs growing out of control, ping me and see if I can help lower your bill.

Apparently a recently closed instance was paying $300/month for hosting which is insane to read considering how small of an instance it was. When we had 40k monthly users I was paying about $120/month so an instance with less than 400 total users (not MAU) should be super cheap to run even with a few TB of storage and bandwidth.

It hurts my heart to read instances closing down over costs and finding out they’re paying more than instances 10x their size. 😢

In the University of Oulu library "Tellus". They had bunch of fascinating books on computer science. Including books that I *thought* were obsolete. I was less amused when I recently refound this image, because nowadays, 99% of current AI hype is running on #Python, which is just less flawed iteration of #BASIC. (...also please don't lob rocks at me, I love Python. Also have fond memories of BASIC.)

A person holds a book titled "Artificial Intelligence in BASIC" by Mike James. The cover features a green circuit-patterned egg with a bright starburst. Bookshelves in the background. (Yes, this caption was made by AI, and I'll present it unedited, because it just happens to be accurate. I usually have to edit these a lot.)

I want to keep the web human. I want to create it with my own hands and consume it with my own mind. I want to surround myself with other people who want the same. That’s *my* web.

If you want to go full-blown Borg and ruin your experience via someone else’s bias-laden stolen-content neural network, you do you. But I find it repulsive.

Map of local National Weather Service office "areas of responsibility" modified (using polygons with black outlines and red fill) to indicate where recent/expanding cuts to NOAA/NWS have resulting in understaffing so extreme that some offices can not longer operate on a 24/7 basis.
