Little PSA: If you or your project has social media accounts hosted on #Fosstodon, you should really pay attention to what's going on right now and consider moving.

If things continue as they are, there's a good chance they're going to start getting blocked by LGBTQ+ and other minority-friendly servers across the Fediverse. I'm not going to go into why. There are plenty of other people posting long threads with receipts that you can go read. But if you want to stay connected to those people, I suggest migrating before connections are severed.

OK I've set a reminder for myself to block fosstodon for next week (Friday June 13th). This is a statement not an invite for you to try and convince me otherwise or voice you shitty opinion on why that's wrong. It's clear they aren't interested in learning or changing so I'm done. That said, I know there are several people I follow or follow me who I would hope want better. So please consider moving instances if you'd like to stay in touch.

This video immediately made me think of the entire conversation happening around the new #Fosstodon admin and mods.

It feels like there is a lack of being heard, and responses are missing some of the core concerns being raised.

Which then leads to frustration and escalating language, which in turn leads to dismissals and nitpicking over the words used instead of the issues raised.

They do not seem to understand why LGBTQ people might feel uncomfortable with moderators who block queer/trans hashtags and won't answer if they are willing to have moderators who block BLM or metoo hashtags.

well, they made one or more posts yesterday containing a bunch of ableist and homophobic slurs, as well as an accusation that "Antifa" murders people.

to their credit, the mastodon.social mods seem to have taken quick action and subsequently banned the account.

anyway, I have a screenshot of an example, but it's (1) vile, and (2) kind of a moot point, so I won't be posting it.

that said, if we're to read the situation charitably, the fact that at least one of Fosstodon's new mod team was interacting favorably with such an obvious troll account is more evidence that the selected mods are unfit to do the job of moderating a multi-thousand-person instance.

and if we're to read the situation uncharitably? well - I don't even need to say it.

It resonated with me a lot. The idea of building software that has an on-ramp that keeps on-ramping, guiding a user to not only become an expert, but to make the software their own, really resonated with me.

It's felt for a long time that Gnome has gone in the opposite direction. Trying to make something easy and clean, but end users aren't part of that journey.
