This humble, somewhat dilapidated shelter, a few miles south of SFO airport, once housed a medium wave aviation beacon (NDB). It currently hosts a variety of aviation surveillance sensors. Its location is also waypoint on the way to SFO runway 28R.

This kind of infrastructure, integral to so much in the modern world, is often nearly invisible, yet also heroic.

Funny that you mention that. Back when I was a card-carrying member of the Libertarian Party*, I helped dig a latrine at a Liberty Round Table retreat in Missouri.

She meets them all the time. To a person, libertarians have been quite simplistic and incurious about what it takes to get clean water to a house.

@Fledglingnerd @pluralistic A libertarian friend came to stay and spent about four uninterrupted hours trying to persuade me of the superiority of libertarianism. At the end of it, he was thirsty and went to get a glass of water from the tap. He stopped and said “Is the water here OK to drink?”

It was 2AM and my filters had long since checked out. Without thinking, I just said “That depends on who bought the water company.”

To his credit, he laughed and said “Touché.”

Rebecca Solnit described the “ideology of isolation” that is the distinguishing feature of American conservatism: “the right to maximum individual freedom, a freedom not to be bothered by others’ needs.”

I think that ideology cuts across most libertarians and Trump conservatives.

Finding fossils depends as much on light and time of day as search image. I’ve walked over this Jurassic sandstone sidewalk slab multiple times over 14 years but only today saw the spider tracks, those clusters of three dots.

I remember a prominent libertarian lament about their movement, "Unfortunately they hate Liberals more than they love liberty." I cannot locate who said this, but it was in regards to many people calling themselves libertarians supporting Trump.
