Neatnik ID, the new authentication system that will handle access to omg.lol, rad.dad, Neato, and more, is ready for some expanded testing. There are still plenty of unfinished parts, and things are still a bit rough in a few areas, but I think it’s getting close.

If you have an omg.lol account, you can help with testing by visiting https://app.neatnik.net/id/ and trying any of the following:

1. Sign in, and ensure that you receive the verification code email. (Let me know if it winds up in your spam.)

2. Add some other authentication methods, and change the ones that are active on your account. (Neatnik ID lets you use as many or as few methods as you’d like.)

3. Poke around the session management stuff, and ensure that your IP(s) and browser(s) look correct there.

4. Access https://eph.emer.al, a little web toy that exists as a proof of concept for testing remote session management.

If you run into any issues, I would love to hear about them. And I really appreciate your help with testing!

When someone claims software to be revolution, consider who is saying it. And ask yourself if they will allow the spoils of that revolution be shared with you if you're not a white dude.

Because historically, inevitably, irrevocably, the answer is a resounding and unflinching ✨No✨

Then ask why is the language of revolution used so often in regards to new tech? Because it works.

Obsolete secret infrastructure like CARTWHEEL tower, only revealed decades later, intrigues me not just for its scale and design, but also for the obvious question it gives rise to. If this stuff effectively managed to stay unnoticed for decades, what newer secrets are hiding under our noses today?

mattblaze@federate.social ("Matt Blaze") wrote:

Despite CARTWHEEL being located in the middle of a residential neighborhood in a busy city and staffed by military personnel, officials went to great lengths to conceal the true purpose of these towers. They hid in plain sight, appearing to be silos or water towers (they even used civilian water trucks to send crews to some of the towers).

It was only after the cold war ended that the details of the network were declassified.

mattblaze@federate.social ("Matt Blaze") wrote:

The upper white section of the tower is actually a plexiglass radome, concealing various microwave and UHF radio antennas.

CARTWHEEL and its cousins were decommissioned around 1990. Most of the towers, mainly atop mountains in remote areas, were demolished or left to rot. However, CARTWHEEL and CORKSCREW (on a mountain near the Appalachian trail in central Maryland) have been maintained in good condition, now repurposed by the FAA.

This unassuming cylindrical tower, at first glance perhaps a grain silo or water tower, was part of a secret "continuity of government" microwave communications network. Built in the early 1960's, a network of similar towers located around the capital region linked the White House with critical sites such as Camp David, Raven Rock, and Mount Weather.

A cylindrical tower, dark brick with a lighter upper section, resembling a water tower or agricultural silo, on a hilltop. Radio towers are visible in the distance. A barren tree is at left.

An interesting alternative to a BASIC running on the metal. Get the advantages of NetBSD's features with the constraints and focus of a BASIC environment.

(Based on my... less than happy experiences building embedded Linux systems, I've also been pondering how well a BSD system might work instead for things like this.)
