July is #DisabilityPrideMonth

Wait, disability ... pride? Why would someone be proud to be disabled?

One of the most important aspects of disability pride for me is to counter the shame. The shame of “being different,” the shame of “needing help,” the shame of “being a burden,” the shame from the humiliation and abuse I have experienced.

Disability pride gives me the chance to counter the shame by saying, “I am disabled, and I am proud to exist and be who I am.”

As Pride Month comes to a close I just want to remind you: Be Proud Everyday

Pride Month is not the only month where we get to exist in public, its the shared time where we come together, commemorate with our communities about our past and strive for a better future while representing the present. It's the time where we remind the people who still want us to stay down why that will never happen. But it's not the only time you get to be proud to be you.

Every day is a day to be proud to be you

It looks like @cliffwade@infosec.exchange deleted his posts where he was talking about the “good uses” of established hate symbolism. I’m glad that he’s at least no longer actively broadcasting that stance, but since I couldn’t find any kind of post acknowledging the removal or indicating that he changed his views, it unfortunately just looks like he’s trying to make it go away and avoid taking any responsibility for himself.

I updated my original post with a link to an archive of what he had said. Continuing to recommend #fediblock due to his defense of hate symbols *and* trying to sweep it all under the rug. (While being a moderator of an instance with thousands of active users. 😬)

It’s really lovely to hear you say this. What a simple gesture that anyone can make that has a huge impact for those who need it most.

I once saw a sticker on the streets with this passage, which aligns with your sentiment. I made a graphic of it because that’s how my family rolls, and I’d love to think more people every day are doing the same thing.

A passage below a rainbow stripe that reads “I don’t wear a rainbow to tell you who’s in my bed. I wear it so the family across the street knows they’re safe. So the couple in the restaurant know they aren’t alone. So the boy who catches my eye while he’s looking at dresses knows I won’t judge. I wear it in solidarity so they’ll be less likely to hide who they are.” It is cited as “seen on a sticker in a public space.”

Really appreciate this piece by @evs, especially for his thoughtful reflection. I also agree with his conclusions, including the part about handing things differently. (If that strikes you as odd, then you’re probably not used to seeing guys online who are genuinely open to criticism, and that’s unfortunate.) I’d love to see more of this kind of analysis, and far less of the loyalty-fueled excuse-making and white-washing that I saw instead.
