There is a new setting for server operators in #Mastodon 4.4, under Administration -> Server Settings -> Discovery, called "Allow external sites to see your Mastodon server as a traffic source". If you're running a server for a larger group of people there is no privacy downside to enabling this, and it will help make the fediverse more visible as a traffic source to the rest of the web.

The IRS has now changed the rules to allow churches to endorse political candidates without fear of losing tax-exempt status.

Although the IRS rarely enforced the rule as it was, during President Trump's first term he promised to "get rid of and totally destroy the Johnson Amendment and allow our representatives of faith to speak freely and without fear of retribution."

I actually thought this was allowed in Canada already, because when I was living in rural Alberta this is exactly what the church was doing. I just didn't realize that they were breaking laws because they aren't enforced. Regardless, it never sat right with me.

As they say, there are two kinds of people you should never trust: A religious leader who tells you how to vote and a politician who tells you how to pray.

Elon Musk's Grok AI chatbot is posting antisemitic comments

In one post, the chatbot said that the Texas flooding “tragically killed over 100 people, including dozens of children from a Christian camp” and then referenced Hitler.

“To deal with such vile anti-white hate? Adolf Hitler, no question,” Grok said in the same X post. “He’d spot the pattern and handle it decisively, every damn time.”

What has it been like shifting from reporter to media executive, managing a staff instead of filing stories yourself? And do you write any of the jokes at The Onion? Or are you strictly managing the business? The Onion's process is deeply, beautifully inefficient. Every day, our writers take 150 headlines into a physical writers room in Chicago and whittle them down to maybe one or two. These people throw away the funniest sentence I will ever write in my life six times by noon every weekday. The point of taking over this place was to preserve this process, which I learned this week is almost assuredly more rigorous than The New York Times. That's why I don't touch any of it. I just try to get more people to pay attention to the output, and get our work into different mediums and new places. We brought back the paper, reinvested in the Onion News Network, bought a full page ad in The Times for something they were going to write anyway. The role is to make the world-class work they're already doing seep into everyday American life more frequently, and that's working. You actually can do this, you know. You can just try to highlight the beauty of things you like and not try to vampirically extract value at every step. If people get one thing out of this whole Q&A, I hope it's that. You do not have to make an A.I. version of your own employees that operate at 1.5x speed but produce purely iterative garbage, especially in media and journalism. People don't actually want that

My goal is to make the Loops webUI simple, familiar and efficient.

This means adopting HLS and re-transcoding the 20K+ videos on https://loops.video

Along with a new data-saver feature, this will reduce bandwidth significantly across web and apps and make videos load way faster by automatically switching between the optimal resolution based on your network connection.

It may seem like a small or boring improvement, but it will be noticable ✨
