When you haven't been exposed to advertising for a while and it's no longer normalised, it's quite jarring. Not because it's annoying or shit, rarely lacking any artistic merit, begging and pleading and lying for attention and complicity - that bit you remember.

But because the only way this crap exists at all is through force, ramming it through devices without permission or consent. An entire industry based on tracking and surveillance to target assault.

It's fucking despicable.

Also, on a far smaller scale, I have had people impersonate me as an author to try to get people to pay them for "editorial consulting," which, I assure you, is a line of work I have no interest in pursuing.

In general, beware of any person of notability (however low that notability is, in my case) approaching you wanting money. It's almost certainly a scam.

To win an arms race, you need a robust ecosystem. To build an ecosystem, you need developers. To attract developers, you need a compelling narrative, complete with a hero, a villain, and a mission.

The CON strategy is well-suited for this need and once you see it, it's everywhere. From #Bluesky and decentralized social media, to #Meta and "open-source" artificial intelligence models.

It's worth noting that both #OpenAI and #Meta are using a very familiar adoption strategy. It's the Corporate Openness Narrative, or, if you will, CON, for short.

It goes like this— we are "open" therefore defacto good.

The #AI race is a marathon. The finish line is product addiction. AI service providers need their models to become indispensable in corporate offices and for the average consumer.

The problem for venture capitalists is no one knows how long that will take. No one knows how much runway they need.

It's less of an issue for big firms like #OpenAI and #Meta. But the smaller firms will soon drop like flies when the funding wells run dry. Another oligopoly in the making.

Photo of a typical country scene: a wooden fence and metal gate posted along the edge of a small junction from a main road, behind the gate a grassy track runs down to a small concrete bridge and then rolls off into the distance over a field. Oh, and under a huge concrete flyover, with massively brutal (in both senses) supports arrayed down both sides of the track.

NYC 2017—The night we landed, before we caught up with the rest of the gang, a few of us went to dinner in one of those trendy food courts in Chelsea. We had spicy noodles with many bottles of wine that we bought one bottle at a time from the liquor store. This photo isn't much but it reminds me of perhaps my favorite dinner of my adult life.

But "lxterminal" will autostart, so I guess it's just X11 programs? And I can then launch xterm from lxterminal.
