at this time two weeks from now, I’ll be having breakfast (and coffee - lots of coffee) before presenting our newest toy creations to the public for the first time at the Designer Toy Art Festival in Philadelphia, PA, US.
We’ll be on the show floor all weekend showing off what we’ve been working on for the last year, including some toys that I sculpted my very self, and lots of toys that I’ve had a hand in manufacturing right here in Ellijay with our merry band of worldbuilding comrades, and I’m excited as heck to see how they’re received by other artists, designers, and the general toy-loving public!

more behind-the-scenes on this question: I'm doing some long overdue packaging migrations and I note that uv's build backend is stable as of this month and does not accept a dynamic version value (see: https://github.com/astral-sh/uv/issues/8714)

I'm thinking about setting the version number in an automated build step but it seems like that will mean that all unofficial builds (like: installing it from the repo) won't have that

what is the user experience for Python command-line tools that _don't_ use dynamic vcs-based versioning in their build systems? do you just accept that if you install from the repo your version number may be incorrect? Or is it common to use placeholders somehow?

It's sort of surprising that Apple engages in SDOs at the (ultra low level) that they do, although I suppose there's a lot of benefits in keeping the lights on in the Potempkin village.
The real mystery is why SDOs haven't evicted them. The basis for modern web SDOs hinges on the ability for competitors to ship without restraint, creating demand for cooperation. But when it's all window dressing, surely there should be some minimal self-preservation instinct?

Working on a blog post, and realising that I have to explain that the foundations of a vibrant open web have been dynamited. Underlying all progress, and all of the processes we used to manage the downsides of competition, was the ability for every vendor to ship the designs they thought best.
Apple has destroyed that freedom in a large & valuable enough part of tech that most efforts to solve problems in the web are subject to Cupertino's NIMBYist veto. And nobody can route around.

One last thought- using the term "immigrant" is causing a greater divide in #Latino communities and people have the very false assumption that they're safe so long as they're legal. I honestly believe that the term immigrant is not at all benign, and is causing harm.

I don't think there's a great answer for this. I've used #LatinX, #Latine, and #Latin. But I am reverting back to #Latino as that is the overwhelmingly recognized name by the people in those cages—male, female, and non-binary persons.
I think you should also just pick one and stick with it. I won't tell you what to use. Ultimately, getting dragged on the internet every once in a while for using the "wrong" term is a small price to pay imo.

At any rate, we're in a stalemate. We are using euphemisms for the human beings being systematically hunted and thrown in cages. We should be having a serious discussion about the future for #Latinos and what we can do to stop this from manifesting into our worst fears. We can't do that if we're not even willing to call us by our name.
fromjason ("fromjason.xyz ❤️ 💻") wrote:
We don't actually know for sure where the term #LatinX came from. Do a search and you will find multiple competing claims.
I support inclusive language. I've always felt, however, that the term LatinX was clumsy and did not respect the language, especially since Latine is right there.
fromjason ("fromjason.xyz ❤️ 💻") wrote:
I have a theory for why we tend to use the word "#immigrant" when we really mean #Latino. It's because no one knows what to call us anymore. Whether we use #Latino or #LatinX, we're going to piss a lot of people off.
The term LatinX gained popularity as a way to be inclusive in our language. It gained credibility because we spread the claim that LatinX was coined by LatinX people, specifically LatinX college students.
The problem is, there is no evidence for this claim.
fromjason ("fromjason.xyz ❤️ 💻") wrote:
Just like we wouldn't say Hitler targeted immigrants when we mean Jewish people, we should not use the word immigrant when we mean #Latinos, in relation to #ICE and the US government.
Doing so lends credibility to the narrative that this is an immigration issue. When in fact, it's a targeting of an identity, not a status.
But that's exactly what we're doing in our discourse and news coverage.
I call this "the nondescript oppressed identity problem."
