Photographer Eric J. Smith captured a whale sneaking up on oblivious whale watchers.

The picture shows about a dozen people looking over the side of the boat to the right, looking for a whale. Meanwhile in the foreground, what seems a few feet from them, a whale lifts its whole head out of the water and looks at them.

I should love Matrix. It is a decentralised, privacy preserving, multi-platform chat tool. Goodbye Slack and your ridiculous free limits. Adiós Discord and your weird gamification. Suck it IRC with your obscure syntax and faint stench of BO. WhatsApp and Telegram can stick their heads in a bucket of lukewarm sick and sing sea …

A Tsunami Advisory remains in effect for the California coast, including all coastal regions in the Bay Area and Central Coast, due to an 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Kamchatka. Remember that a tsunami is a series of waves carrying a large mass of water. This will NOT be a single wave, and the first wave might not be the largest. Even if wave heights are low, dangerous and powerful currents are possible in the ocean and at the beach. Stay away from the water! Stay away from beaches and waterways! Remain away from shore until local officials say that it is OK to return. Do NOT try to go to the coast to take photos! You will not just put yourself at risk, you will put the people who have to rescue you at risk. Estimated time of arrival is 12:15 AM on July 30 at Monterey and 12:40 AM on July 30 at San Francisco. Tsunami hazard zone maps are available at https://www.conservation.ca.gov/cgs/tsunami/maps

I made a typeface, it's called Flexflex 🔠

I've been working on this project on-and-off for many months. Very happy to finally release it!

Flexflex is a typeface that responds to spatial requirements rather than imposing them. Built on a modular system, each letter can fit inside any given rectangular container and transforms continuously if its ratio changes. In theory, it's infinitely flexible.

For more information and interactive demos, see the website: https://ronikaufman.github.io/flexflex

Discourse, in their endless wisdom, decided to now include the discourse-ai plugin by default in their distribution, which isn't just.. you know.. AI bullshit - it's also adding a hard-dependency to the pgvector PostgreSQL extension - which isn't included in any default distribution, so they just threw a big fuck-you to everyone self-hosting it with their own database setup.

It's days like this where I keep questioning why I'm still running infrastructure for FOSS projects.
