@NfNitLoop this is great advice! I actually started the migration when I got the laptop and then canceled it because it was taking too long and I was being impatient. I was considering starting it up again and letting it run through the night, but I kinda like the idea of starting fresh.

Good insight, I think that's exactly what I'm going to do

@fromjason Like 🤯 crazy wrong configurations for a computer. We tried to `brew install` things again. It installed more x86 tools. Because the migration tool had migrated the x86 version of Homebrew. And of course, Homebrew never fathomed they'd need to check: "Is this x86 binary still in fact running on an x86-native operating system?" so it just assumed that was the correct architecture and continued downloading & (re)installing x86 binaries. 🤦‍♂️

@fromjason 😬 I know I’m late, but I recommend never running a migration tool for a computer. A new laptop is a great chance to start fresh, but migration tools are often written to “bring everything”, including cruft and misconfigurations and bugs.

Last week I helped unfuck a coworkers laptop because the Apple migration tool had copied x86 binaries onto his m4 laptop. He’d unknowingly been running everything through Rosetta emulation, which worked well enough until it spectacularly didn’t.

In his recent FediCon talk, Evan Prodromou implicitly rationalized his collaboration with Meta by proclaiming, "you don't negotiate with friends". Maybe not, but you don't hand enemies the keys to your kingdom either, which is exactly what he has done by giving Meta seats at the table of the ActivityPub working group. And for that matter, accepting a relatively significant sum of money from those enemies to fund your foundation goes rather beyond the negotiation phase as well, does it not?

We already know that the Social Web Foundation and SWICG leadership will ignore the latest news of Meta's mass datacrime against the fediverse and continue enabling the parasitic Zuckerberg entity to influence the future of ActivityPub development by facilitating its presence on the W3C working group overseeing AP. This is also a bit of a nod to Grant Wood's famous 1930 painting, American Gothic. (See https://www.artic.edu/artworks/6565/american-gothic). Wood's painting was inspired by a grandiose, ornate attic window in an otherwise humble rural farmhouse that Wood happened upon during a road trip. The absurdly oversized, incongruously Googie-style arrow sign here reminded me of that.

This was a case where I hadn't really planned to make formal architectural photos and so had only a small camera with me, with no shifting lens. I made do by shooting wide with the camera level and cropping, which works but costs resolution and constrains how you can organize the frame. It worked well enough here, but I always feel like I'm leaving something on the table when I don't have the right gear with me.
