Getting absolutely reamed by AI scrapers again today, and it seemed like my mitigations were failing. Why weren't these being blocked?

Oh. Because I had Facebook's subnets on the fail2ban whitelist, so that people sharing @dnalounge links on the Zuckerweb got link previews.

Welp. You can't whitelist "facebookexternalhit" (the link preview bot) without also whitelisting "meta-externalagent" (the AI scraper, which seems to ignore robots.txt).

I guess link previews are gonna be a casualty.

It's getting very Season 1 Episode 3 in the US right now.

Screenshot from The Handmaid's Tale TV series. June, a blonde woman walks with other women as they exit their office building after being fired. Beyond them are cars and modern multi-story buildings. Other dismissed female employees can be seen in the background. The subtitle shows a woman asking "Why'd they send the army?" This scene occurs immediately after June and all the women at her office are fired due to a new law prohibiting women from holding jobs, as they notice the unusual military presence on the streets.
Screenshot from The Handmaid's Tale TV series. Armed soldiers in dark tactical uniforms stand in formation next to the office building, holding assault rifles positioned near a black SUV. Lenore responds in the subtitle "I don't think that's the army" as the newly unemployed women observe these troops that are enforcing the regime's new laws.
Screenshot from The Handmaid's Tale TV series. Close-up of June's concerned face as she processes both losing her job and seeing these armed forces, her blonde hair framing her worried expression. She's leaving the office building. Her subtitle reads "I think it's another kind of army" as she realizes these aren't regular military but the enforcement arm of the emerging Gilead regime.
Screenshot from The Handmaid's Tale TV series. Riot troops in black tactical gear with clear shields violently disperse civilian protesters holding signs on a city street during a later protest that June and others attended. People are being brutally pushed back and scattered as they try to resist the regime's oppressive laws, showing the violent suppression of dissent. One has stepped forward with an automatic weapon aimed at the protesters.

Well, Veronica has perfected a way to talk to newbies.

Not even through the introduction yet, and I've learned that MLK was also a Massey lecturer (1967).

Choosing an existing #CSS version as base for the #smolweb is complicated 🤔

CSS Mobile Profile 1.0 seems to be a good candidate. It is a subset of CSS 2.1.

It excludes rather than changing existing properties:

No positioning (position: absolute/relative/fixed) - avoided complex layout calculations

No advanced selectors (:hover, :focus, attribute selectors) - reduced parsing overhead

No table layout properties - simplified rendering

No generated content (:before, :after) - reduced memory usage

However, it is difficult to conform this CSS profile for a beautiful website.

Also looking at CSS Mobile Profile 2.0, it's significantly more complex than 1.0 and includes features that may conflict with smolweb goals of lightweight, computationally-efficient CSS.

Other option is to open smolweb to the whole CSS 2.1 (or 2.2) profile.

In all case, a smolweb site must be browsable with disabled styles (inline style blocks and linked CSS)

https://www.w3.org/TR/2014/NOTE-css-mobile-20141014/

https://www.w3.org/TR/CSS22/

Which version is the most adapted to the smolweb ?

- You will call all my exes and pretend it was a butt dial while feigning presence at a martini lunch. All martini lunches you simulate *must* include (1) one muffled comment from me that is met with uproarious laughter, (2) the voice of a smoking hot babe that is into me and you can tell, but i don't even notice because i'm just living my life

Not official because Netflix won't officially share box office data, but I think for Netflix the money will assuage that, as their take is pure profit at this point.

Also, I strongly suspect that being on streaming was the right place for this movie to go as viral as it did. This film blew up on word of mouth and unfortunately the theatrical window these days does not keep movies in cinemas long enough for that to happen easily. It can! But it's more difficult. Netflix was the right place.
