Hello everyone!

We've just made a bugfix update for #GoToSocial v0.19.x, here's v0.19.2 Most Seditious of Sloths:

https://codeberg.org/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.19.2

This release does exactly one thing compared to v0.19.1: we fixed an issue with interaction policy parsing that made GtS users unable to reply to people on instances that use the canQuote interaction sub-policy (such as the newest Mastodon code).

The release is specifically for people on v0.19.x or below. If you're already on latest main / snapshot / nightly or whatever you want to call it, stay there.

Please read the release notes carefully for instructions on how to update to this release.

As with v0.19.1, the release contains trans + queer pride flags in the footer HTML. If you need to remove these because you're in a place where it's dangerous to show such flags, there's a way to do so in the migration notes.

Thanks for reading!

Ps. v0.20.0 is still a few weeks out, we just wanted to get this bugfix release out now because Mastodon will be updating to use canQuote soon, and we didn't want people's interactions with folks on Mastodon to break.

Announcing Gaza Verified

https://gaza-verified.org

I’ve been having video conversations over Signal with people from Gaza who have Mastodon accounts on the fediverse in an effort to vouch for their authenticity.

This week, I whipped up a site to formalise this and to enable them to add a verified link to their Mastodon bios. Hopefully this will cut down on the amount of time they need to spend proving that their accounts genuinely belong to a person suffering through genocide and famine in Gaza and help them with their fundraisers.

The first four accounts belong to:

@Aseelsehwel
@NouranKhaledGh
@joynewacc
@mohshbair

If you want to get on the site, please contact me. See the guide for more information: https://gaza-verified.org/guide

Please share and donate to their fundraisers if you can.

Thank you!

Welcome to Issue 212 of The Continent.

We join more than 250 newsrooms in 70 countries blacking out front pages in solidarity with journalists in Gaza.

Read Ansam al-Kitaa’s despatch from Gaza City: https://bit.ly/212%5FTC

The cover of The Continent is almost completely black, with no pictures or illustrations. At the very top is a thin grey band carrying the date 6 September 2025, the issue number 212, and the words African Journalism. Just below that, in large bold grey letters, is the newspaper’s masthead. The rest of the page is empty black space. In the middle of it, in small white letters, is a single line of text: Ansam Al-Kitaa in Gaza City.
This page has a warm yellow background with large bold black text at the top that reads: “We live in the same world. Let’s read from the same page. ”Beneath the text is an illustration of Astro, The Continent newspaper’s mascot. Astro is lying on their back, relaxed, holding up and reading a large newspaper. Below the illustration, the text says:“ We deliver Africa’s leading independent newspaper to your device, for free, every Saturday morning: thecontinent.org/subscribe”At the bottom of the page, two columns list The Team and Our Partners, naming supporting institutions such as 11th Hour Project, African Union, Amplify SA, Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, Pulitzer Centre, and others.

@briankrebs God, I though we were past this nonsense.

Perhaps Mr. Mitchem might want to include in his essay a summary of Oregon's data breach notification statute, which quite possibly applies in this situation, and which could create some nontrivial obligations and liabilities for the university.

Copying an archive.is link of this OregonLive.com story because it probably deserves more attention and is behind a paywall:

"A former University of Oregon undergraduate who says he discovered a significant security flaw in the college’s computer network and twice reported it to university officials faced a disciplinary hearing as a result."

"Physics major Owen Mitchem said he was able to inadvertently access confidential information, including the Social Security numbers of more than 3,500 public university employees around the state, last fall, including of the university’s president and its football coach, the highest-paid public employee in the state. He says the breach should have been a wake-up call for the university to tighten its online security."

"But according to an email the university provided to The Oregonian/OregonLive in response to a public records request, the university’s associate dean of students, Dianne Tanjuaquio, concluded that Mitchem’s actions violated the school’s policies on “acceptable use of computing resources.” She required him to write a 750-word essay reflecting on the situation; if not completed, he could face a suspension of his student account, preventing him from registering for classes or changing his course schedule."

"Mitchem says he was just searching in Microsoft Teams for some budget figures for the physics club he ran when he stumbled across a spectrum of university financial documents, visible via files on SharePoint, a Microsoft tool that can be integrated with Teams. They seemed harmless at first glance, he told The Oregonian/OregonLive, but not something his student email permissions should have allowed him to view."

"Mitchem alerted a physics department grants technician and assumed the wide access would be quickly corrected. He later found out that the technician hadn’t alerted the university’s information department, meaning that unbeknownst to him, the IT department remained unaware of the security lapse, Mitchem said via email."

Instead of 32 bits going straight into retro-computing (e.g. with Linux & Firefox ditching it), maybe we should keep it alive as some kind of "alternative mainstream", given the insane availability of hardware and the fact that it's both fast enough for most purposes and not that hard to backport anything but the most wasteful "modern" softwares. That's a "permacomputing" I could get behind, instead of the cold war computing cosplay.
