:prami_happy: Three exclusive single-letter omg.lol lifetime addresses are now live on https://bids.lol!

They are: @a, @l, and @x. The winning bidders get the full omg.lol bag of goodies for each, for life.

This year, I’ve changed the way the auctions work. We’re now using a sealed-bid second-price auction format, also known as a Vickrey auction. With this format, all bids are private and the winning bidder pays the second-highest bid amount. This encourages people to pay whatever they think the addresses are worth, and it avoids bidding wars, sniping, and the pressure to spend more than you might otherwise spend. I think it will work much better for these auctions!

Bidding is open through noon EDT on September 14, though that could be extended by another week depending on how things go. And as always, half of the proceeds from these lifetime addresses will go directly to the St. Jude Relay fundraiser. ❤️

Happy bidding! 🥳

oh stop it, C.P. Snow, with your charming, slightly self-deprecating critique of "computer gadgets" from 1964!

The Gadget Charm My second apprehensive question concerns an intellectual danger with great practical consequences. Cybernetics, as named by its founder, is a beautiful subject with great intellectual variety, depth, and complexity. I suspect, however, that the computer in certain hands could easily become a gadget. Gadgets are the greatest single source of misjudgment that I have ever seen, or that anyone has ever seen in scientific decisions in our time. People get fascinated by gadgets. They love them. They want everything to be explained in terms of their gadget. They think it is the answer to everything on heaven and earth. All the bad decisions I have seen have some element of gadgetry in them. And I suspect that computers in government are going to get into the hands of persons with mildly defective or canalized judgment and become gadgets. It will be astonishing if that does not happen.

Aviation nerditry: Trump flew into LGA today for the US Open via one of the 757s ("C32A") in the executive fleet serving as AF1, instead of a more usual 747 (which can't safely use LGA's 7000 foot runways). When they use a 747 for visits to NYC, AF1 generally lands at JFK. But they're presumably using LGA for its proximity to Ashe stadium.

A KC-135 tanker is currently circling NYC, which is the normal practice. A tanker always accompanies AF1, to be available for emergency in-flight refueling.

This photo was made about six months later; some of the physical damage from the attack remains visible here.

The image depicts a cartoon-style illustration featuring a figure with blonde hair and a large mouth, positioned above a cylinder labeled "PREZ." The figure's mouth is open wide, with a tongue extended, and it appears to be consuming or spewing out rectangular blocks labeled "LIES." These blocks are falling from the mouth and are scattered around the base of the podium. The background is a simple gradient, transitioning from light pink at the top to a pale blue at the bottom. The overall style is reminiscent of political satire, with exaggerated features and bold, clear lines. The illustration is signed "JAPER 18" in the bottom left corner.
