Since many people are canceling their streaming services, I can recommend a new documentary series from NOVA PBS about the origin story of Homo sapiens. It includes several recent discoveries on the different human species, as well as the impact that climate change had on our evolution.

@slightlyoff I used the BBC as an example in a talk about performance inequality a couple of years back, I did the math back then, and iirc, if a median income person in Chad on a median cost data plan read 5 articles a day, reading the BBC would cost them 3% of their income.

ICYMI, this morning's opinion by Judge Kelly (a Trump appointee!) protecting Guatemalan children from deportation after the admin's justification "crumbled like a house of cards" is worth reading. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

MEMORANDUM OPINION Just before midnight on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, several Executive Branch agencies began to implement a plan to expel from the United States certain unaccompanied alien children in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services and send them back to their home country of Guatemala. Those agencies told the children’s caretakers, who were hearing about the plan for the first time, to have them ready for pickup in as little as two hours. The children were roused from their beds in the middle of the night and driven to an airport, where some were loaded onto planes. Lawyers got wind of this hasty operation while it was unfolding and filed this lawsuit seeking emergency relief that Sunday at 1:00 a.m. The judge on emergency duty entered a temporary restraining order barring the agencies and their officials from removing or otherwise transporting the children from the United States. At a hearing later that day, counsel for Defendants explained why it was “fairly outrageous” for Plaintiffs to have sued: all Defendants wanted to do was reunify children with parents who had requested their return. But that explanation crumbled like a house of cards about a week later. There is no evidence before the Court that the parents of these children sought their return. To the contrary, the Guatemalan Attorney General reports that officials could not even track down parents for most of the children whom Defendants found eligible for their “reunificatio

This is exactly why I was screaming at Biden and Senate Dems to abolish the Jim Crow filibuster and pass the legislation that the American people wanted and deserved. But feckless leadership was so beholden to "norms" they refused.

We knew the GOP would do this. And now they've done it. And Schumer is still pointing at an irrelevant rule book of norms. smh

A two-panel photo gif of a cop kneeling to talk to a small owl that's walking down a road. In the top panel, the cop says, "Where you going little guy?" in all caps. The bottom panel is a closeup of the owl's face, which has a Y-shaped marking of white feathers above their tiny black beak that simulates pissed-off eyebrows. The owl responds, again in all caps, "None of your goddamn business! Am I being detained?!" A good lesson on how to respond to purportedly friendly chat from a cop.

Three-panel comic modified from WikiHow article on dog training. In the large panel on the left column, a woman in a green t-shirt, brown trousers, and pink flats kneels before a husky type dog in sit position. She raises her finger and says, "Speak!" This panel appears to be original. The half-size ones in the right column look to be WikiHow art with new text. The top panel is a closeup of the dog barking, with the text "Not without my lawyer present" superimposed. In the last panel, the dog looks a little surprised but happy to have the woman hand them a tiny bone-shaped treat, with her words "Good Boi" superimposed. An important reminder never to talk to the cops unprotected.

Netscape Navigator 2.0 was released 30 years ago today.

This version introduced a number of new features:

• Plugins! This was the first time a web page could make sound, via RealAudio.
• Incremental display of progressive JPEGs on slow dialup connections.
• Animated GIFs that were actually useful.
• HTML frames.
• JavaScript! That wasn't my fault, but you still have my apologies.
• And of course my baby, the first release of Netscape Mail and News:
