the screenshot of the ceo of #bluesky #blueskysocial saying "we didn't do blocks because they're hard" is a straight-up admission to not being serious about solving the nazi problem. sorry, you cannot recover from this by ONCE MORE AND YET AGAIN FOR A JACK-DORSEY-RELATED VENTURE, implementing blocks as an afterthought. bluesky is irrecoverably fucked.

EDIT TO ADD: per https://circumstances.run/@davidgerard/110278426748225990

the bit they left out is that the person this was in aid of was Matt Yglesias who had a flock of trans posters tell him to fuck off, then fuck off some more

they didn't care about [harassment] until it was Matt Y

a screenshot from Jay of Bluesky, which reads: Reposting a thread from last night on blocks because a day is a year here. 1. It looks like people are being harassed today 2. I am sorry we do not have blocks yet, we are working on it 3. We did not get blocks in v1 because of protocol-level complexity

I keep seeing people flat out state that this bubble popping won't have meaningful consequences outside of tech.

Meanwhile it’s the biggest bubble of the century in a severely weakened economy , poor regulatory environment, and a global community in near collapse

@manton So let me get this straight: you dropped into my mentions, posted a complete lie about me, accused me of spreading other lies (without elaboration or evidence), and now you’re deleting that post (which incidentally isn’t even deleted from Mastodon because your ActvityPub implementation remains deeply flawed), and you just want to pretend it never happened?

Add in the fact that the thing you accused me of lying about—the receipt of a cease and desist notice earlier this year—was the most stressful thing I’ve experienced in a very long time. And you just casually declared that I made it up? Can you maybe take a moment to consider how that might make someone feel? (And look up DARVO while you’re at it.)

And now after the damage is done, you just want to hit the undo button?

This doesn’t sit well with me. At all. I share a fair amount of criticism toward you, for sure, but it’s all based on your own writings and actions. You don’t have to like it, though it remains my right to post it. But I have never once said an untrue thing about you. I’ve said unflattering things, but none were lies. Not once. But today you decided to cross that line yourself when you made an entirety untrue statement about me. And it *really* doesn’t sit well with me.

If you don’t want people to question your integrity, maybe you shouldn’t conduct yourself in a manner that puts your integrity in doubt. Like lying about people.

Let me make this perfectly clear: sharing an opinion about something you’ve said or done is not an “attack”. Pointing out how gross it is that you’d give a written high-five to a jerk CEO is not “coming at you”. Drop the victim framing and grow up. If you don’t like what someone is saying about you, ignore it, or respond to the underlying central point. Don’t just lash out by spreading lies and then write about how no one should ever subject you to criticism because they don’t know what you’re going through.

I’m genuinely sorry to hear about your mother. Best wishes for a speedy and strong recovery.

"Google is just as bad!" is telling on yourself.

To use Popper's framing, it's pure, uncut *"who should rule?"* brain. And that's not our problem now. Our problem is how to get away from concentrated, easily-subverted power structures.

And that doesn't involve horse-race thinking; it involves alternatives that are not singly owned. Alternatives like the web and PWAs.

I swear none of these people have rubbed two neurons together about platform choice in a decade+.

In reality no, it's not federated in any meaningful way, or at least not any way that mitigates the problems of traditional social media and web network effects. It's more of the same, but more jargon!

It's pretty clear from the #Bluesky CEO's shitposting that she really would rather not have all those uppity trans folks and their friends on the platform. Instead she'd prefer to proudly talk to investors about how even J.D. Vance has an account.

It's the digital town square! Everyone is empowered to moderate their own feed, except if you say mean things about Charlie Kirk.

It that doesn't make you want to build over here instead, I don't know what will.

If anyone's confused by what the heck is going on with latest Bluesky drama, I've tried to summarise it in one toot here:

https://social.chinwag.org/@FediThing/115308150378037772

This is in context of Bluesky welcoming JD Vance to their platform with an email to Fox News, allowing him to post transphobic stuff, welcoming other prominent transphobes, while simultaneously banning people who were disrespectful to Charlie Kirk.

There is a far right pattern emerging in how Bluesky chooses to ban or not ban people.

she's double and tripled down by telling people to go on "posting strikes" about it and claiming she owes them no loyalty because Bluesky doesn't accept any sort of payment for the service (yet)

there is much more she has posted but these are the highlights so far

Saw this on BlueSky, and unironically, yeah? Back when #cohost was still a thing, there was a user who ran a BBS for six or eight months or something. They were in their 20s, way too young to have ever called a board in the 90s. And, it was great? The message area was thriving with just a few dozen users. It can be done! We've had between two decades and a quarter century of posting publicly. Maybe it's time to get back to things that are smaller, weird, more joyous.
