Azhdarchid: So, if you're online poisoned like me, you may have noticed that Bluesky CEO Jay Graber has been having sort of a slow motion, low-key public meltdown for the past several weeks...

Shocked — just shocked — to discover that supposedly-decentralised social network Bluesky is entirely under the control of the single company that developed it and runs the entire network, and that their CEO is able to personally override moderation decisions to unban high-profile transphobes and ban people who complain about it.
This was completely impossible to predict and nobody ever suspected that anything like this could happen from the outset.

Yup. Also, being able to talk to the people who run your social network server is one of the best things about the Fediverse.
Keeping each server small enough that the admin is reachable makes it a lot easier to have a humane approach to social media.

@thegaffer @pluralistic The shooting sports community has been working for years to do something similar, replacing the term "accidental discharge" with "negligent discharge" to reflect the fact that barring extremely rare mechanical malfunctions, guns don't just go off on their own.
If it fires without you intending, it's because you were doing something stupid and dangerous like having it loaded when you shouldn't have, leaving your finger on the trigger, etc.
So just like with a significant number of car crashes, it's not an accident it's negligent behavior on the part of the operator. This sort of terminology should become more prevalent in general.

The only fire Manton has ever put out was when he had to take Vincent Ritter’s name off the Micro.blog website because he couldn’t actually address the issue of employing a Musk-loving guy who thinks pronouns are bad.
How about we pay attention to which social community leaders show active support for marginalized people, and which ones show active support for waffles.

@manton arsonists like tech ceos that point and laugh at transphobic users lighting on fire the trans users of a service? I agree it'd be a good idea to point them out and hold them accountable for the harm they are causing, particularly in the current climate that is normalizing dehumanizing trans, immigrants and more broadly anyone not MAGA. It's a good idea to be fire fighters ready to point those arsonists out in order to protect those being harmed. 👏 👏 👏

Great analogy. Whenever I see a clueless entitled tech guy lighting a fire that burns marginalized people, I’ll be there to toss a bucket of water on him.

There will be some people who read this thread, clutch their pearls, and exclaim how wrong I am about Manton.
I’m tired of those people’s willful ignorance, and the way they inevitably prioritize their support for one man over the need to build and promote genuinely inclusive spaces. Especially right now, more than ever.

Manton says he’s tired of being “attacked” (as if pointing out his embarrassing conduct qualifies as an attack on anything other than his own ego). But do you know what *I’m* tired of? I’m tired of people in positions of leadership and influence carelessly hurting others through their ignorance. I’m tired of watching my trans friends suffer through a rise in fascism and seeing those who could be using their influence to help only further twisting the knife.

Yesterday, in the face of active turmoil surrounding the Bluesky CEO’s disgusting treatment of trans people on her platform, Manton Reece (owner of Micro.blog) posted a message praising that very CEO and her “strong principles and vision.”
Even after multiple people pointed out how terrible and insensitive of a take that was, and even after the day passed, his post remains exactly as he wrote it. No retraction, no clarification.
He’s telling you exactly what he means.
