Ya know, right now would be an AMAZING time for Mastodon's leadership to break bread with the Black programmers that really wanted to help make this place less racist.

Bluesky just banned a prominent Black user from basically being seen by anyone. Because Bluesky's CEO is mad about their posts. ATProto is clearly showing serious signs of weakness.

Do the people who love the Fediverse have the guts to admit we have poorly served the Black community and need to apologize? To take radical steps to show this place will be worth investing in for Black users who may want to leave Bluesky?

Now is the time to act and do so. If ever there was a time to put a massive amount of momentum behind the Fediverse, it'd be now. We should do it.

Another interesting thing this about this piece is the timing:

1. Manton gets super upset about me daring to call him out for his awful, insensitive take on the Bluesky situation.

2. He announces that he’s disconnecting from Mastodon because it’s “broken” and “divisive”.

3. Not long after, Manu posts about how social media is awful.

4. Manton promptly boosts Manu's post.

Manu’s blogroll.org site is sponsored by Micro.blog, but I’m sure this is all coincidence. 😎

This has been said a million times a million different ways but it’s worth repeating: the goal of a good developer isn’t to write code that compiles and tests that pass. The goal of a good developer is to solve a problem and hopefully in the process write code that can be understood by the next person maintaining it 10 years from now. The challenge is not in creation itself, it is in decided what to create and how and why

In the past, when I’ve chosen to call people out like Vincent Ritter and Manton Reece for their harmful statements and actions, the “calling out” was a crucial choice. Both Vincent and Manton had (separately) implored me to keep my comments private and send an email instead. But private channels are where accountability never sees the light of day.

There are times when calling in is more appropriate than calling out, but never when you’re seeking genuine accountability in the face of harm.

This was an interesting piece, not for what it said, but for what was missing. Noticeably absent is any recognition of the real power that social tools offer for public accountability, and how open criticism can empower people who would otherwise be completely oppressed.

It also seems to make the assumption that all negativity in a social context is “shit” posted by “despicable human beings”. No room for the possibility of valid criticism? How strange.

And so, after about six month of slow, faltering progress I could consistently run three 5-milers a week.

Back to that overpass photo. During all these 5 years, whenever I drove near that place in a car I looked longingly at cyclists and runners going through that trail and wondered whether I'll be able to do it myself every again.

Today I finally ran through that spot again, on a distance of 7 miles!

The end.

But for the insurance to cover it I needed to go through yet another therapy, because rules.

This time things have been different. My PT loaded me way more than any therapy before and was able to convince me after a couple of months that I was measurably improving, even though I didn't feel it. We also discovered that what was holding me back wasn't my knee, but all kinds of other problems you could think of, pains in various joints, muscle cramps, etc. So she taught me how to work with those.

So I got referred to physical therapy. That didn't really help, and to make it short I'll say that I've been through MRIs, x-rays, ultrasounds, PRP therapy (this is when they separate your own blood and inject plasma to where it hurts), and two more physical therapies. None of that helped completely, although I could *occasionally* run 5 miles, but never routinely.

So I asked my doctor to refer me to a knee surgery before I get to old for it to make sense.

This is the spot through which I used to run my 13 mile and longer distances. About 5 years ago something clicked in my knee after another run, and after a couple of weeks I realized I couldn't run freely anymore. And then I couldn't run at all. Eventually I found time and worked up enough courage to go to a doctor. And ultimately a surgeon said I had "plica syndrome". I didn't know them that "syndrome" in doctor speak means "something is wrong with it", not that they actually know what to do.

Yeah I'm still mad about it, why do you ask?

Ultimately, Manton and I just have different values. He values the actions of tech CEOs, and I value fair treatment for oppressed people. He cheers for billionaires, and I cheer for the underdog. He employs a guy who can’t stand the use of pronouns in video games, and I show people like that the door.

We’re just different. And that’s OK. As long as he’s happy with the choices he makes, that’s all that really matters.

(Everything above is 100% fact and can be backed up by things Manton has published. But he’ll still cry “misinformation”, just like the orange guy always cries “fake news”.)
