It's not the sign-up process that's preventing a mass-migration to #Mastodon. Reduce barriers to entry, sure. But it was not so long that we had to load a CD, type in credentials, and listen to the Internet demons summon our connection.

No, it's that Mastodon isn't suitable for Internet fame. The big accounts will ever come to a place that doesn't support an algorithmic caste system. How'd they know who's more important? If the big accounts won't come neither will anyone else

For each of the last few days, I've gotten half a dozen new followers of the form "So and So from Gaza" with a profile pic of either a stern-faced man or a crying baby, and a gofundme link. Surely they're all fake, but if they were real would that be *more* awful or less?

i think it's funny when people say "mastodon has moderation issues too!"

of course it does. it's millions of real, messy humans interacting over multiple communities with intersecting and often contradictory rules, moderated by real, messy humans with feelings and biases. of course it has moderation issues, it's inescapable when you put millions of people together

the thing that makes fedi (imo) better is that here you get to at least *choose* the messy humans making the decisions for you

Ya know, right now would be an AMAZING time for Mastodon's leadership to break bread with the Black programmers that really wanted to help make this place less racist.

Bluesky just banned a prominent Black user from basically being seen by anyone. Because Bluesky's CEO is mad about their posts. ATProto is clearly showing serious signs of weakness.

Do the people who love the Fediverse have the guts to admit we have poorly served the Black community and need to apologize? To take radical steps to show this place will be worth investing in for Black users who may want to leave Bluesky?

Now is the time to act and do so. If ever there was a time to put a massive amount of momentum behind the Fediverse, it'd be now. We should do it.

Mastodon *is* microblogging. You publish posts, and people can subscribe to your RSS feed. Just like a blog.

If you subscribe to my feed (http://social.lol/@adam.rss), you’d never even know that my posts came from Mastodon. They could be from Bear or Pika or Movable Type.

The best part? All of the “social” parts of Mastodon are excluded from the feed. No favorites, boosts, or replies. Just posts!

Maybe I’ll just call this my blog from now on.

Our email exchange continues, and it's good. I'm trying to make the case that algorithm-free social tools like Mastodon are nothing like their algo-driven counterparts, and that Mastodon is more similar to blogs and RSS than this person may realize.

A point I made: if you encounter outrage on traditional social media (X, Facebook, etc.), it's because it was amplified to boost engagement and drive revenue on that platform. If you encounter outage on Mastodon, it's because you follow someone who happens to be upset, or you follow someone who's sharing a post about someone else who’s upset. This is no different than if you subscribed to someone's RSS feed and they publish a cranky post, or they publish a post about someone else's crankiness. In both cases, if you don't like what you see, you can just unfollow/unsubscribe (or filter/mute if your RSS client lets you do that, like you can on Mastodon).

Indian Railways hits net zero 5 years early, and will be 95% electrified by 2029-30. Given the size and scope of the Indian rail network and the challenges involved in upgrading it, this is no mean feat at all. FWIW the UK is *nowhere near* 95%. #climatechange
