This is a social media platform, with many different ways to use it. It's fine. Mostly, just try to be decent to other people, just like you should try to be everywhere else.
Please enjoy jwz mixtape 255.
Last night we did a screening of The Lost Boys, and it was epic. Amongst all of our Cyberdeliae, this was the one with the rowdiest audience: lots of screaming and singing along. Excellent costume contest entries, too.
For this one I did something a little different from the others: instead of DJ music over abstract visuals, I filled the pre-roll and intermission with music videos featuring VAMPIRES. I only needed 30 and 20 minutes...

So how about some diversionary attacks on racial minorities living in large cities run by Democrats, breaking doors down, rapelling in with helicopters, dragging people out of their dwellings in dead of night, some naked, and zip-tying them, including children?

When I learned HE would be taking the picture for my CBS staff ID (“Seriously?!”), I realized I was suddenly in a whole different league.

It's not the sign-up process that's preventing a mass-migration to #Mastodon. Reduce barriers to entry, sure. But it was not so long that we had to load a CD, type in credentials, and listen to the Internet demons summon our connection.
No, it's that Mastodon isn't suitable for Internet fame. The big accounts will ever come to a place that doesn't support an algorithmic caste system. How'd they know who's more important? If the big accounts won't come neither will anyone else
For each of the last few days, I've gotten half a dozen new followers of the form "So and So from Gaza" with a profile pic of either a stern-faced man or a crying baby, and a gofundme link. Surely they're all fake, but if they were real would that be *more* awful or less?

of course it does. it's millions of real, messy humans interacting over multiple communities with intersecting and often contradictory rules, moderated by real, messy humans with feelings and biases. of course it has moderation issues, it's inescapable when you put millions of people together
the thing that makes fedi (imo) better is that here you get to at least *choose* the messy humans making the decisions for you

Ya know, right now would be an AMAZING time for Mastodon's leadership to break bread with the Black programmers that really wanted to help make this place less racist.
Bluesky just banned a prominent Black user from basically being seen by anyone. Because Bluesky's CEO is mad about their posts. ATProto is clearly showing serious signs of weakness.
Do the people who love the Fediverse have the guts to admit we have poorly served the Black community and need to apologize? To take radical steps to show this place will be worth investing in for Black users who may want to leave Bluesky?
Now is the time to act and do so. If ever there was a time to put a massive amount of momentum behind the Fediverse, it'd be now. We should do it.
