I gotta admit, I am loving how little of the conversation is just "BlueSky bad! Mastodon good! 🤡" and how much of it is "BlueSky is not ideal for Black users, but let's be for real, neither is Mastodon. We don't have control over BlueSky, but we do have some agency with Mastodon. How can we make Mastodon better? Where are we with improving the issues that make this place unwelcoming for Black users? Clearly, more Black users chose BlueSky than Mastodon. Have we addressed the reasons why?" ♥️🥹

Seriously, I count ~5 conversations in the improvement framing direction. I love to see it! Shame on me for having lower expectations.

I'm unapologetically backing improvements across ActivityPub and ATProto. I back Hachyderm/Mastodon and BlackSky. You can just back both teams! Nothing in the rules says you can't do that!

Re: Smart Glasses

Last year, I tried—and failed spectacularly because I'm not a mathematician—to come up with an equation to determine how many Americans would need to wear smart glasses in order to effectively surveil all (most) Americans.

Lots of assumptions packed in:
- always on camera
- average time outside
- average unique people in eyesight each outing etc etc

Is it 20%? 10% 5??? 1?????

Is the equation possible?

The image features a still from a television show with Mr. Fred Rogers speaking thoughtfully. The text on the screen expresses a sentiment about evil wanting people to feel bad about themselves. The setting appears cozy, with a blurred background of a home-like environment. Full quote: “I keep thinking that evil would like nothing better than to have us feel awful about who we are.”

Reading is Fhtagnmental

A woman with pale skin a greenish tint and green embellishment on her eyelids and lips. She has a short orange-ginger bob haircut and all she's apparently wearing is a heavy necklace chain suspending a large rough-cut green gem in a silvery metal setting. She's holding a heavy-looking leather and metal-bound tome open in one hand at chest height and seems to be pointing out a text with the finger of the other hand. Magical green letters of an unpronounceable language are floating up from the pages of the book, connected to each other and to the necklace gem by rough edged bubbles and umbilici. Her body below where it is occluded by the book shows the progress of the spell being invoked, as she transforms into a writhing mass of warped parts of hideous sea monsters: tentacles, teeth, spikes, claws, grasping mouths, and dead blue unblinking eyes. If you read this far you must agree with me that it is cool and gross.
