It's becoming increasingly clear to me that Reflect Orbital's fucking stupid giant mirror satellite, with absolutely NOTHING useful to offer, which will cause countless safety issues, ecological disasters, and destroy the night sky, is going to launch.

A bunch of astronomers and I have sent out a fact sheet about them to a bunch of journalists, but very few are going to write about this. So, let me try posting it all here.

Here's what I know about Reflect Orbital and all the downsides:

SHAPIRO: ...Or saying... SIMON: You imagine that? SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over. SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level. SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this. SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Software is a collection of ideas and decisions that a person has turned into a machine.

When it turns out that person has repulsive, noxious and dehumanizing ideas, it is entirely reasonable to not want the machines they've made in your life, or the decisions they've made affecting your life.

It is entirely reasonable to object to their being part of communities you care about, and to object to their ideas and decisions being normalized or valorized.

Nothing about this is complicated.

I paid a fuckton of money for my @frameworkcomputer laptop parts. I paid extra for the parts I could've saved money on elsewhere because I wanted to support the company and what they stand for. I even ported Debian to the RISC-V Motherboard for the product that made Framework Framework: The Framework 13.

Now Framework decided to sponsor Omarchy and Hyprland, the leaderships of which are not just "politically of a different opinion", they are actively toxic, hostile and highly discriminatory, to phrase it euphemistically.

Nirav Patel responded to this in the community forum, essentially doubling down on the decision to take a "big tent approach".

I want to reiterate: __This isn't about "political differences", because the political difference are actively harmful to democracy itself, and the physical safety of marginalised communities.

Someone I supported in good faith with both code and money turned around and gave this money to multiple people who'd rather see me dead for existing.

Needless to say, I feel quite betrayed and I'm really torn on wether or not I should even continue and proceed with the port for the second RISC-V mainboard, because I don't want to end up supporting the hate towards me, my wife or other people in the same situation as me.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels betrayed by this decision.

Oh wow, the @frameworkcomputer team's reply to them supporting far-right racists is terrible: https://community.frame.work/t/framework-supporting-far-right-racists/75986/2.

I don't want to spend money with a company that has a "big tent" policy and allows people to piss in it. I never want to be in a tent with people pissing in it. OSS does not need it.

Speaking as a German - this 'big tent' approach just doesn't work.

Today is a good day to write to support@frame.work using your shop email address. I will.

I disagree with a lot of people here, and that's fine. We can disagree on what tax rates should be. We can disagree on the best mix of public and private ownership. We can disagree on the amount of government involvement in markets. We can disagree on what privacy rights need to be protected by governments versus which need to treat the government as the adversary. We can disagree on which OS is best. We can disagree on the best way to build a Free Software ecosystem (we can even disagree on whether that's a desirable goal).

But we can't disagree on which people are people. If your perspective is that some people are not people, there is no way that we can still have a meaningful conversation. That's not a 'there are two sides' kind of debate. That's a 'no, this isn't a debate and we can't build a functioning society if you disagree' kind of debate.
