What's interesting about "big tents" is that I've never seen their advocates try to stretch them as far to the left as they do to the right. It's never like "we're sending free laptops to this Maoist insurrectionary group because they have really interesting ideas." It's always about stretching the tent to fit the people advocating for fascism.

Reminder that it doesn't matter which Mastodon server you join, as long as you:
Don't join one that's too big;
Don't join one that's too small;
Don't join one using server software your client doesn't support;
Don't join any of the hundreds of servers that are widely blocked by admins;
Don't want to move servers more than once in some cooldown period; and
Don't care about leaving your posts behind when you move.
Other than that, it's a completely inconsequential choice and totally like choosing an email provider.

@pluralistic This ends up in a bad place because the law is based on precedent and, across time and space, has historically been interpreted in pro-authoritarian ways, even in nominal democracies (see also: libertarian butt-hurt about 30s supreme court corrections).

@pluralistic The law, as you and I have known it until now, has worked on the principle that to win a case, one must provide evidence.
In Apple (and Google and FB)'s villain eras, this is *inconvenient*. It's why they now shrink from the idea of engagement with the law and demand to set policy above and beyond any democratic accountability.
Is it corrupt? Not necessarily.
Has it been corrupted? 100%.

I have a piece on the boil that builds on @pluralistic's trenchant analysis of Apple's "rogue capitalism"[1], but even before we get to that, it's important to understand the damage Apple's money is doing to the legal profession in formerly-liberal jurisdictions. As with Oil and Tobacco interests, Apple pays top-dollar for lawyers and astro-turfers [2] who will repeat fiction for cash. This is now Cupertino's primary export.

Another way to think of the Framework fiasco, perhaps:
I'm not naive. I don't think that when, say, I bought my XPS 13, Dell didn't send some percentage of that to the Koch brothers or whatever fascist du jour. But I live in a society, and I needed a laptop.
Framework's whole *thing*, their competitive advantage, was being better. For the most part, that came from upholding political values like repairability and OSS, but still.
They just blew up their entire competitive advantage.
I'm playing around with NextCloud and the first thing I would like to do is make it use my in-house, bespoke auth system. It seems like the user_saml plugin might be the thing to mess with, since it uses the words "Authentication via Environment Variable" but I have no idea what it means by that.
Ideally I'd have it just run a shell command for authentication, the way Qmail / Dovecot "passdb driver = checkpassword" works, since I already have that working for IMAP...
