The quiet rollout of Cop Cities across the US meets a growing resistance | Waging Nonviolence:

Backers of Bitcoin, or "AI", occasionally try this ludicrous argument that technologies which intentionally waste energy are good for climate change, because by creating portable demand for energy they encourage alternative energy development.

To the fossil fuel providers, they tell the truth: "AI" and Bitcoin can soak up the supply created by alternative energy, so that we continue burning coal and oil even after wind and solar become cheap enough to dispace it.

It's because a) I've studied enough AI to know it's a trick, a sort of linguistic illusion, and b) I've studied enough everything else to understand that I'm not immune to such illusions.

I think of how different my life is compared to my parents’, and theirs before them. My grandfather carried sacks of rice and spices as a day laborer. My grandmother sewed things for pennies. My dad could not afford to go to college even though he’s one of the smartest people I’ve ever met, but he found a very technical career (making dentures) and he did that his entire career. My mom was a maternity nurse who could bathe many babies at once. I got to do everything that I do on the backs of spices, seams, fake teeth and baby baths.
