Today in History: six white police officers shot and killed an unarmed 25-year-old Black military veteran named Roland T. Price outside of a bar in my home town: Rochester, New York. The shooting was deemed “justified” even though evidence showed that Mr. Price did not resist the officers’ demands.

Mr. Price was the recipient of the Purple Heart medal, which he was wearing when he entered the bar in his military uniform that evening in 1947.

We recommend that server owners update their Mastodon installations to bring these improvements to their communities as soon as they can. There are a lot of great updates, now ready for everyone.

Server owners can do more to manage and showcase their community. Mastodon 4.5 has settings to define the visibility of different feeds (timelines), and also the ability to set the default landing page to the local feed. There are also new tools for restricting problematic usernames, and improvements in the moderation interface.

Two screenshots of the Mastodon administration interface, showing new settings : - one to select who can access live feeds featuring local posts - another one for live feeds featuring remote posts - a third one named "Landing page for new visitors"

Mastodon 4.5 brings Quote Post authoring features to everyone. Note that you can manage whether or how your posts are quoted by others, both globally on the new Posting Defaults page, and individually on specific posts. You can also revoke the use of a post. ‘Even in the seven-to-eight-seat scenario, Democrats might need to win the popular vote by five percentage points to merely have a 50-50 shot to win the House.

In recent decades, five-point victories in the House popular vote have generally happened during “wave” elections, like in 1994, 2006, 2010 and 2018, when one party ends up winning a large majority. And only once in the past 30 years has it happened during a presidential election year: Barack Obama’s win in 2008.’

Additionally, without Section 2, North Carolina’s current plan to dismantle its First District would pass legal muster. After those seven or eight seats, things get a little fuzzier."

I find myself thinking about the difference between non-profit projects and community-owned projects, in relation to LLM adoption which doesn't show apparent sympathy for community and volunteers.

Wikipedia and Mozilla seem hell-bent on shoehorning LLMs into their systems, in the latter case blowing away community labour. There's no sense in it beyond groupthink.

Are tech non-profits separate from industry, or a section of it that doesn't make money?
