Another thing I've learned debugging WiFi issues: having router sitting on the floor is a bad idea. How bad can it be? +10dBm bad.

Raising the router off the floor by just 30cm significantly improved network coverage, including on the floor below it!

This is another case where smart gadgets are dumb. Apple's HomePod was in charge of picking the channel for the Thread network, and it picked a channel incompatible with the WiFi network it was connected to! No Intelligence in this Apple.
I've wasted days pulling my hair out, trying to understand why everything I did to improve the network coverage only made the network more flaky.

WiFi and #Thread/ #Zigbee networks use overlapping ~2.4Ghz frequencies, and interfere with each other.

I've learned it the hard way. My old gadgets kept losing WiFi connection, so I bought the biggest baddest WiFi router. It made everything way worse!

The router kept picking an "unused" WiFi channel 1, which was the same freq as Thread channel 11 that my HomeKit hub picked for its network. Stronger WiFi kept collapsing my Thread network, and knocked even more devices offline.

I was reminded of this behavior just now.

Another photo from the cemetery today. Dr. Milner was 26 years old at the time of her death. She was one of only 12 women who graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 1924. It's getting a bit difficult to search for it now due to the Gemini AI crap. Are there any plans to give Gemini protocol a new/altered name? Maybe an abbreviation or acronym or something?

My six years of Latin study paid off today when I noticed the inscription above this crypt. Everyone of course knows "RIP" means "rest in peace", though the Latin is actually "requiescat in pace" which translates more closely as "may he/she rest in peace". The "requiescat" is the third person singular present active subjunctive of requiescō (meaning "to rest"). But in this particular inscription, we see "requiescant" — the "nt" being the telltale sign that we've shifted to the third person plural conjugation, so "he/she" becomes "they". And since this crypt holds the remains of two people, "may they rest in peace" is definitely more fitting.

(I hope you're more impressed with this knowledge than my wife was when we drove past it earlier. 😆)

Minna's Masks is a story about a girl who loves wearing masks. But one day, her very first at a new school, she realises that she hasn't brought her masks - and she needs them to cope with new people, new situations, loud noises.

And bedtime reading is no longer just a rote task, but an opportunity to connect deeply with your shy kid.
