To be clear, my desktop works fine on Windows 11. But the general ratio of cool new features to egregious bullshit is low. I do not want to talk to my computer. I do not want to use OneDrive. I’m sure as hell not going to use Recall. I am tired of Windows trying to get me to use Edge, Edge trying to get me to use Bing, and everything trying to get me to use Copilot. I paid for an Office 365 subscription so I could edit Excel files. Then Office 365 turned into Copilot 365, and I tried to use it to open a Word document and it didn’t know how. Meanwhile, Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10, including security updates, forcing people to buy new hardware or live with the risks.

I don't manage to get time to end writing the account management process of https://message.casa

It is not complicated, just registration with an invite code, and password change, but they must be secured processes.

I'd like to keep accounts anonymous, just a login and a password, without requiring an alternative email address. But this implies that it is not possible to get a link to reset the password.
Isn't it too dangerous to not have this possibility? If you lose your password, you definitively lose your account!

It's not a good idea to send the reset link to the message.casa address. If you want to reset your password, it could be because someone has stollen your device or your session.

Is there a good design pattern to reset a password without a "backup" alternative email address?

Put another way: it may seem counterintuitive, but sometimes the best way to maintain a genuinely *inclusive* space is to be intentional about whom you *exclude* (and why).

If this strikes you as wrong, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ve often found yourself in the majority demographic of any given community you’ve joined, and you’ve likely enjoyed a lot of privilege as a result of that. (And you have my condolences.)

People who run online social spaces often make the mistake of saying things like “everyone is welcome here”. I think a more fair and honest framing might be something like “everyone is welcome to step inside, but not everyone will be welcome to stay here.” Doesn’t sound as warm and friendly, but at least it’s real.

The measure of a community is what it will do to keep its members safe and protected from harm (or even asshattery). No one scores points for good intentions here. Results matter.

Thinking back to the time that I had to ask someone to leave omg.lol because of their ongoing offensive remarks. One of the last things they (sarcastically) said to me was: “so much for being welcoming to everyone.”

The thing is, you can’t maintain a safe space for *anyone* if you try to be a home to *everyone*. The utopian ideal of wide-open online spaces where people with opposing beliefs happily co-exist quickly crumbles when one person is trans and the other is a TERF.

Four panels are arranged in a horizontal row, depicting a simple, cartoon-style comic. Each panel features two mice, one addressing the other. The first panel shows one mouse looking at the other, with a small, cylindrical container labeled "BRAND" between them; the text reads “HAVE YOU SEEN OUR NEW CHRISTMAS AD?”. The second panel shows one mouse looking dejected, responding to the other; the text reads “I CAN’T AFFORD TO EAT THIS MONTH”. The third panel shows the same two mice, again with the container between them, and the text reads “WE MADE IT WITH AI”. The final panel shows the same two mice, with the container, and the same text “WE MADE IT WITH AI”. The mice are yellow with round ears and small, black eyes, and the background is a pale, off-white color. The comic is signed "IRREGULARGALAXydoods" and "[@]IG_DOODS" in the bottom left and right corners, respectively.

Unpaid Open Source Developers hold up the right side of the stack on a tiny pillar. DNS forms two tiny pillars on either side of the stack holding up the majority. Below them the Linux Foundation forms an entire platform holding up the entire stack. Below that is a tiny thin pillar as the basis of everything, it represents the undersea internet cables, it is being bitten by a shark. At about the middle of the stack a giant lever is being turned slowly pushing the entire tower over, it's labelled AI.

I mean, I knew how SGU was supposed to end, but that was a dozen-some-odd years ago now and I don't expect the new series to stick with what we came up with back in the day (if indeed they address it at all), not the least because we didn't actually get to put it onto the screen. What I know may be canonically obsolete, is what I'm saying. Better to wait to see what the New Official Story is.
