I'm starting to think that AI is causing a sort of mass hysteria, where people too close to the technology and people who are too far from any frame of reference for the technology, are under some weird hypnosis caused by a very realistic mimicking of human sentience. The Cottingley Fairies was a hoax in the early 1900's where two cousins "photoshopped" fairies into photographs of themselves.
Photography was new enough that something like this had never happened before.
The Fairies were so convincing that it fooled the author of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle, and he wrote an essay arguing fairies were real.
