Whatever we may feel about AI and its longterm usefulness, we can agree that #Anthropic and #OpenAI's regulatory capture strategy to kill #OpenSource doesn't benefit anyone but these companies.

We don't need another telecommunications style monopoly. We don't want OpenAI to become the Comcast of AI.

It's a massively impressive piece of work, even by the already high standards of the #retrocomputing community. A few notes on why I think this is important. Firstly, I don't think you can really understand any field without understanding its history, and I think software engineering is especially bad at this. We tend to dismiss anything more than a couple of years old as irrelevant, which is why we're constantly reinventing the wheel and have people who don't realise that you can build a web page without using a JavaScript framework. One of the nice things about historical software is that you can actually use it, and take it apart and modify it, which leads to a much deeper understanding than you'd get from just reading about how it was used.

Today I’m thankful for having a 25 year old washing machine I can easily replace the hot and cold water control valve with filters that clog up every 3-4 years. The part is less than $10. This morning it took two hours to fill — not anymore!

The last 5-10 years we’ve been getting more sand/grit in our water. The well appears to be working well. There’s probably some kind of larger capacity sand trap I could add where the well water comes in to the pressure tank.

For comparison, if an EU company wants to do business in US, it has to follow not only US federal laws, but also state laws and county (!) laws. Americans in EU have it much easier, because they enjoy laws that are largely harmonised among member states rather than the US mess of incompatible state laws and variable sales tax rates between counties.
