If I understand this correctly the reason RAM has quadrupled in price is that a huge quantity of RAM that hasn't been produced yet has been bought with money that doesn't exist to populate GPUs that also haven't been produced to go in datacenters that haven't been built powered by infrastructure that may never exist to meet a demand that doesn't exist at all to make profit margins that mathematically can't exist while economists talk about this thing they call the "rational markets hypothesis".

@owa Also, if you know anyone working at one of the big AI firms, pass this along. All are making browsers, none are investing in the commons. Looking to salve their guilt? How about $10-100K donations to OWA? Literally the least they can do.
slightlyoff@toot.cafe ("Alex Russell") wrote:
@owa If you happen to be at a BigCo, your internal giving portal will find OWA listed as "Aspiration" (a US umbrella for tech non-profits). The tax details on OWA's donation page should be all you need, but be sure to include the text "in support of OWA's charitable cause" (or similar) as a note with your donation so that Aspiration knows to route your contributions to them.
And if you can afford it, why not set up a recurring donation with matching? The good you can do on autopilot is huge.

It's that time of year, and there are many worthy causes jockeying for your donations (and corporate matching). If you make your living from the web (web apps, JavaScript, etc.), I can attest firsthand to the way @owa is using antitrust regulation to unlock browser choice jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction, for the whole web's benefit.
Yes, Mozilla should have done this, but it has instead fallen to a plucky band of independent web devs, and they need our support:

this is the only post about Mozilla drama you'll get from me, because a) I'm tired, b) I'll be on vacation starting tomorrow evening, c) most of y'all have either already used your brains, or you just want to knee-jerk - which is fine, too.
in any case, don't listen to me, because lots of folks will claim I'm biased anyway (which, tbh, is fair, given I like having a paycheck). so instead, check out this post from a community contributor who isn't paid, and who has no reason to be nice if he doesn't want to be nice:
