On Substack, @pluralistic I have described a subtle example of Apple giving itself an unfair competitive advantage over its developers: https://luccogzest.substack.com/p/apples-macos-apps-are-the-weak-link : Apple can create links from Calendar app to specific messages; but it does NOT provide an API for developers (and automators) or UI to do this. This limits tools like Hookmark which enable users to link most of the information on their Macs (emails, files, tasks, etc.) per https://hookproductivity.com. I can explain in more detail if you like.

I saw my aunt this weekend. I always admired her growing up: she was a dedicated dancer, bird watcher, traveler, and general arts-enjoyer. I took up ballet and piano because I wanted to be just like her.
I just found out that she started all of those hobbies after she got sober in her 40s, shortly before I was born. Her defining characteristics, in my eyes, have occupied less than half of her life.
It was a nice reminder that you can start a new chapter of your life whenever you’d like.

I have just learned that, beginning in 3 days, my employees will no longer be able to receive their work email.
Apparently Google is dropping support for Gmail accounts being able to fetch mail from outside accounts. At all. And they announced this change less than 60 days ago. (The announcement was in the basement, stairs, leopard, etc.)

@QasimRashid An interesting question here, that we will never get to know the answer to, is why did the plaintiffs accept such a low settlement? Was it because they thought they would lose, was it pure short-term venality, or was there some other threat or bribe?
Since the plaintiffs were "the Facebook shareholders" I assume this was always a "whoever wins, the rest of us lose" situation, but still.

We often say you can find anything on the internet nowadays, but that's not always the case.
I wondered how the "construction" of the new White House ballroom was progressing, but I can't really find up-to-date photos.
I read there's a schedule to start construction in April 2026. So is it just a pile of rubble?
Anyone know of someone in DC who regularly posts photo updates of progress?

Who gives a shit if Hank's napkin math suggests that corn consumes more water. What does water consumption in Iowa have to do with data centers in Mexico?
These companies want to spend a trillion on data center development and they're hiding their consumption data. Thats it. That's the story.
