Guys, I've just seen a pair of glossy black cockatoos and I'm losing my mind. They're not only my favourite bird, but this variety is really rare in the Illawara region. And yes, the female (the one with the tequila sunrise tail pattern) was the inspiration for my newest tattoo.

I feel like I've just seen a dodo!

Huh, interesting. The Bandcamp widget's "site is down" template has been updated to link to Bluesky now instead of Twitter. Feels like a sign of the times sites are starting to realize their "site is down" status accounts aren't useful for a lot of people if they can't be seen logged out.

Overall, be safe, be smart. Know that cops are not on your side. Know that protesting and the state response to protesting has changed dramatically since George Floyd and Black Lives Matters.

Biden oversaw the largest expansion of militarized police in our history.

If you don't know what I mean when I say Atlanta is one of the most protester-hostile cities in the world, you will soon.

When you see cops at non-violent protests dressed for combat, ask yourself— where's the war? Who's the enemy?

Know your exits.

Did the protest organizer work with cops to set the location of your protest? If so, it's all but guaranteed that location is ideal for trapping you in there.

If you're trapped, you're more susceptible to whatever tactics cops want to employ.

A protest location with limited entrances and exists is dangerous. Avoid it.

Side note: when I first started protesting, I pretty much broke every single rule. Sometimes I learned the hard way. So, don't feel bad. Don't get defensive. We're all learning.

You should approach protesting as if it were illegal, because, for all intents and purposes, it is illegal.

We have ~85 cop cities around the country with Israeli military-trained cops. What do you think that's for? It's coming to a neighborhood near you.

Don't RSVP to your protest. Don't sign up for anything while at the protest. Don't hand out your contact information while leaving your protest.

Avoid adding your name, number, email address to any lists.

Adding yourself to a list is a great way to get yourself on a list.

Dress: the goal is to blend in and cover yourself. Standing out puts yourself and others at risk.

Reduce the amount of identifiable information—take off piercings and jewelry, cover tattoos, put your hair back.

Costumes are, generally, a terrible idea for a march. If you must, wear it before or after, and change clothes.

Lots to cover with this topic. If you're interested in learning more, here's a good resource:

You probably shouldn't take your phone with you but, you'll need to decide the risk/reward.

If you do, turn it off. That won't necessarily protect you from tracking, but it locks your phone forcing a PIN number to open.

If you don't have your phone off, and you're greeted by police, turn off your phone immediately for the reason above.

I don't know every law in every state, but most don't protest biometrics as privacy. Cops can compel you to open your phone with a fingerprint or face.

First, if you believe that this information doesn't apply to you because you're not a “criminal”, or because you're a “peaceful protester,” just stay home. Seriously.

Don't put more vulnerable people in danger. There are plenty of other things you can do for the cause. It doesn't have to be marching.

I am, by no stretch of the imagination, an expert in protesting. But, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

No, I did attend protests in Atlanta over the years and I learned a few things while marching in one of the most protester-hostile cities in the country.

So, if you're out, that's dope! Here's some basic tips to keep you and the people around you safe(r).
