If they got their way with this my aunt would lose her citizenship, my cousins and my parents. Ironically I would still be "safe" until they decided something more draconian like "Heritage American" but it's the most depraved bizarre thing this pushes to denaturalize people who have already been here, not bothering anyone and are some of the hardest workers in this country. The fixation on picking off Latino and Somali immigrants almost is giving a preview of this.

I've seen a lot of photos showing the massive crowds gathered in Minneapolis today, but I want to remind folk that today was actually a day of economic blackout, and the protests and other events were there to help us bond, learn, teach, and share.

But the main show was actually the complete lack of activity and spectacle around the normal center of life: the economy.

We'll never get an honest accounting of how that went down, but I know in addition to the indie stores that shut down, a LOT of folk working corporate gigs didn't go to work today.

I think this photo, showing one of the main stretches of highway into the city, during what should be rush hour, instead showing a smattering of cars, is one of the better demonstrations of that part of today.

A photograph of a stretch of American highway with about a dozen cars in either direction.

Back when I did a *ton* of interviewing at Google, folks sometimes asked what they should do before going for interviews; my answer (for working programmers) was "take a couple of weeks, or a month of weekends, and just write complete programs, end to end, that do something."

Complete programs. End-to-end. That do something.
