I can’t believe anyone would have to say this right now, but here we are:

Nazis are terrible. Their ideology, their paraphernalia, and their behavior—all terrible. There is no nuance to this. There is no intellectual reasoning that leads to any valid conclusion to the contrary.

Speak out against Nazis clearly and loudly. Or don’t! But don’t try to crack the door open on tolerating any aspect of that stuff and expect it to go well for you.

Zoom the fuck out, dude. How hard is it to just call Nazi shit terrible? Why are you continuing to find a way to use technicalities to defend the abhorrent point you originally made?

These people just can’t help themselves.

That means I am left with 160 million potential customers. If I somehow pissed half of THEM off, I would have 80 million potential customers. And if I pissed half of them off, 40 million would be left! The population of California!

You're probably gonna be fine speaking your mind, is what I'm saying.

Hey @fediforum when I clicked on the link you just sent me in the email you just sent about your un-workshop on "Growing the Open Social Web" my email client warned me that it was a tracking link.

As I said last year,

"The "Open Social Web" is a term surveillance capitalism companies and their friends have been using since at least 2008 either as a synonym for "the Fediverse" or "the fediverses". FediForum used to be about "the Fediverse", and I'm not quite sure when they changed their focus."

Thanks for providing such a great example of the surveillance capitalism-friendly nature of so many supporters of the "Open Social Web"!

By contrast, a long-standing #fediverse value is the critique of openness. I don't know how many of you were here in 2020, but that's when the outstanding Seven Theses On The Fediverse And The Becoming Of Floss was published, and it's got an excellent section on that. Please read it!

They don't believe in anything. They hear about state sponsored murder and violence and they reach for the mute button. Truly the worst of them.

The biggest mistake one can make when leaving the corporate web is to falsely equate contrast with morality. Just because someone says "hey we're not like meta" doesn't make them people you'd want to associate with if you believe in "radical" things like trans rights, or that a fascist military should be abolished.

It's easy to make a compelling argument for leaving the corporate web. But it's so tricky to steer someone towards alternatives.

Solar panels last longer than expected -- after 30+ years some panels still generate 80% of their original power. At least in the study area (which was Switzerland) panels made in the 80s and 90s had a degradation rate of about 0.25%/year, which is frankly not all that much.

Solar panels. They're just a really good energy investment.

Primarily looking for remote work, but would consider in-person in the UK if the circumstances are right.

Available for either contract work through the company I run (easiest route if you're outside the UK), or direct employment.

It’s astonishing how many people will make excuses for their online heroes. Manu can advocate for Nazi shit because people enjoy his interviews. Manton can support bigots because people enjoy his software.

Predictably, this film is also drawing negative reviews from people who would really prefer not to have the "AI" narrative challenged. It's informative (and entertaining) to see what the criticisms from such quarters are.

One review is headlined "‘Ghost in the Machine’ is Already Behind the Times" ... which is particularly hilarious because the film does an amazing job of tracing the historical roots of today's "AI" ideology.
