A side branch: I’m newly frustrated by the way “concentration camp” has become synonymous with “death camp.” The distinction matters because the Nazis operated concentration camps for many years before they turned them into death camps; the original official plan was to •deport• all the Jews from Europe. It turned into mass killing only when deporting that many people proved impossible. And by missing that distinction and forgetting that history, we fail to notice that (1) DHS is most certainly building and operating concentration camps, (2) they are not death camps yet, and (3) this trajectory is exactly how death camps eventually came about under the Nazis.
