Empathy and accountability are not mutually exclusive.

Manton writes about "sides" here, which is interesting to me. There's always a line drawn between sides. I'm on the side that says that when you have an employee who harasses a trans person, you should fully acknowledge that—for accountability. When you have a Nazi dogwhistle on your website, you should change it promptly rather than complain about it—for accountability. When you ignorantly fawn over a transphobe CEO and get backlash for it, you should apologize (and not delete people's critical responses)—for accountability. And Manton has shown that he’s on the other side of that line, each and every time.

If Manton actually tried taking some accountability for his actions, maybe he would be able to experience a little more of that empathy that he’s seeking.

But actually... you should blame others for not showing empathy instead. More nuance is usually the answer. Accountability is a harm thrust upon people who just *naturally* deserve more good faith. /sarcasm

I've said on here before, that I love the transformative power bikes have on how people think about interacting with each other🚴🏼‍♀️♥️

Having a bike stolen resets a white US person's understanding of what cops do and do not do.

Commuting on a bike resets a white US person's understanding of racist infrastructure.

I love bikes, especially cargo bikes and attachments for kids, because it's only about a 5 year learning journey for white folk from

Today, in honor of Black History Month, we remember Nat Turner, who led one of the only effective, sustained slave revolts in U.S. history (in 1831). They killed over 50 people, mostly whites, but the authorities put down the rebellion after a few days. Turner survived in hiding for several months. The militia and racist mobs, in turn, slaughtered up to 120 free and enslaved black people, and the state executed another 56, and severely punished dozens of non-slaves in the frenzy that followed the uprising. Turner’s revolt set off a new wave of oppressive legislation by whites, prohibiting the education, movement and assembly of enslaved and free blacks, alike. After his conviction, he was beheaded and flayed, to deter future rebels. His skin was used to make souvenir purses and his skeleton was used as a medical specimen. In the 1960s, there was funk-soul band Nat Turner Rebellion. Tupac Shakur had a cross tattoo on his back, "EXODUS 1831", in reference to the year Turner led the rebellion
