This is a truly unfortunate matrix of power and influence. The average person fleeing from the corporate web will view the IndieWeb as a safe space, only to later find out it's, at best, controlled opposition.

The capital-I-IndieWeb, and capital S-Social Web are not anti-corporate, despite their marketing language that lures us in. But once you're inside, IndieWeb leaders will defend corporate social media, directly or indirect.
Some of them truly believe we cannot move forward without Meta. It's an affliction of the imagination. Some of them come from Big Tech companies, like leaders of IndieWebDotOrg, and some of them were paid off like the Social Web Foundation.

@fromjason Kev showed us who he was when Fosstodon had its bigotry moment and instead of addressing it, he just said “I quit” and walked away. Couldn’t bring himself to defend a queer person or even speak out against bigotry in general.
But yeah, he enjoyed that moment of negative focus at the time. All of these guys do. They’re always just one half-step away from the MAGA GoFundMe grifts that the far right do whenever someone calls them out for their shitty behavior.
And the thing is, people lap it up. The IndieWeb is full of these white cishet influencers who are lifted up as idols by other white cishet wannabe influencers. This is the toxic side of the space, and it’s propelled by a whole lot of “let’s just focus on blogging tools and not talk about *that kind* of politics”.
And now you know the one thing that’s on my own silly list of random things that I hate.

1. Bad Bunny halftime show
2. They heard someone say "Palestine"
3. They remembered the song "Wet Vagina" by Doja Cat exists.
4. They accidentally read a post about "Black joy" and it made their tummy ache
5. Chappell Roan.
6. They think people are too mad at Mark Zuckerberg for being in the Epstein Files.
7. All Birds hasn't had a sale in a while.
8. The city of Atlanta

The open/indie/social web is, unfortunately, rife with centrists—people whose only sense of obligation is to their personal comfort. Who equate intelligence with apathy. Who, if ever faced with a teaspoon of oppression, would fold like origami. You'll never fully know what a centrist believes, not because they hide it, but because they're husks. They don't believe in anything. They hear about state sponsored murder and violence and they reach for the mute button. Truly the worst of them.

No. Nononononono. It is not built on _knowledge_, it it built on _data_. And not everyone's experiences are available as data, many communities are excluded. Also: "Collective" implies some sort of collaboration and shared activity. But "AI" is just accumulation by a few powerful.
So No. It's not collective but extractive, not knowledge but data, not humankind but the hegemonic western view. Everything in that statement is wrong.

One of my goals this year is getting better at CSS. I joke that my CSS skills peaked in 2015. But CSS has gained a ton of new, really cool things and browser support has been moving quickly compared the days of old.
This talk by Dylan Beattie from NDC London 2026 is a great introduction to what CSS is capable of these days.
I’m also slowly working through a course called CSS for JavaScript Developers by Josh Comeau, which is fantastically done.
