This is a truly unfortunate matrix of power and influence. The average person fleeing from the corporate web will view the IndieWeb as a safe space, only to later find out it's, at best, controlled opposition.

The capital-I-IndieWeb, and capital S-Social Web are not anti-corporate, despite their marketing language that lures us in. But once you're inside, IndieWeb leaders will defend corporate social media, directly or indirect.

Some of them truly believe we cannot move forward without Meta. It's an affliction of the imagination. Some of them come from Big Tech companies, like leaders of IndieWebDotOrg, and some of them were paid off like the Social Web Foundation.

And the thing is, people lap it up. The IndieWeb is full of these white cishet influencers who are lifted up as idols by other white cishet wannabe influencers. This is the toxic side of the space, and it’s propelled by a whole lot of “let’s just focus on blogging tools and not talk about *that kind* of politics”.

And now you know the one thing that’s on my own silly list of random things that I hate.

So No. It's not collective but extractive, not knowledge but data, not humankind but the hegemonic western view. Everything in that statement is wrong.

One of my goals this year is getting better at CSS. I joke that my CSS skills peaked in 2015. But CSS has gained a ton of new, really cool things and browser support has been moving quickly compared the days of old.
