A community is not its platform.

Discord made it all too easy to fall into a terrible trap, linking community identity to Discord-specific features. Sure, the features are nice, but they’re ultimately Discord’s, and not the community’s. This is their business model.

Real communities, made of engaged people with common interests and values, can thrive in different spaces. They can survive a move. They’re bound by something stronger than Discord’s conveniences and cosmetics.

After getting a late-in-life ADHD diagnosis, you realize how important having the proper context to navigate the world is to your wellbeing.

On the day I got my diagnosis, it finally occurred to me that I should consistently park in the same row of my grocery store's parking lot so that I remember where I parked.

I stopped fighting the problem under the false idea that my awareness would improve. I think about that everytime I do groceries, which then makes me more aware when I park lmao.

A comic in four panels: Panel 1. A serene parc outside the University of Magic under the great teapot moonshine. The gothic sorceress and her blond elf new friend, and a magician, are all sitting and chatting, smiling around a little fire. All the little group don't have their AI (Avian Intelligence) Parrots and have books, sketchbook, a knitting kit, and sit under a banner: "The NO AI Club". In the background, the headmaster walks with a lantern with his AI Parrot flying near his shoulder is shocked at the small club. Panel 2. Shot on the headmaster, in anger, his face red with indignation: > Headmaster: "Why don't you have your Avian Intelligence with you? It's the future! You can't stop it!" Panel 3. The Gothic Sorceress turns around, holding her arm out like a weapon towards the headmaster, and casts a spell, emitting a magical light from her fingers. > Gothic sorceress: "Muteo!" Panel 4. The same view angle as in panel 1, the gothic sorceress smirks and she is proud of herself. The headmaster continues to scream at them in distance, but his speech bubble now only has a 'mute icon' in it. > Gothic sorceress: "Can't stop it? Please, that was super easy!"

But yeah, he enjoyed that moment of negative focus at the time. All of these guys do. They’re always just one half-step away from the MAGA GoFundMe grifts that the far right do whenever someone calls them out for their shitty behavior.

And the thing is, people lap it up. The IndieWeb is full of these white cishet influencers who are lifted up as idols by other white cishet wannabe influencers. This is the toxic side of the space, and it’s propelled by a whole lot of “let’s just focus on blogging tools and not talk about *that kind* of politics”.

And now you know the one thing that’s on my own silly list of random things that I hate.

The open/indie/social web is, unfortunately, rife with centrists—people whose only sense of obligation is to their personal comfort. Who equate intelligence with apathy. Who, if ever faced with a teaspoon of oppression, would fold like origami. You'll never fully know what a centrist believes, not because they hide it, but because they're husks. They don't believe in anything. They hear about state sponsored murder and violence and they reach for the mute button. Truly the worst of them.

No. Nononononono. It is not built on _knowledge_, it it built on _data_. And not everyone's experiences are available as data, many communities are excluded. Also: "Collective" implies some sort of collaboration and shared activity. But "AI" is just accumulation by a few powerful.

So No. It's not collective but extractive, not knowledge but data, not humankind but the hegemonic western view. Everything in that statement is wrong.

Post from El Paso city council rep

Post from /u/ChrisCanalesEPTX : Update thread on FAA closure of El Paso airspace There are multiple posts about this issue that are getting difficult to track, so l'm going to try to consolidate my updates here in one place. I've been up all night trying to get information to share with the public, but we're just not getting much from the federal government at the moment. We have no reason to believe that there is any kind of imminent safety threat to El Paso, but we still have no reason provided by the FAA or any federal authority, and that lack of explanation is obviously fueling fear and speculation in our community. FAA contacts, including those at the phone number listed in the notice, have said they also don't know the reason. What's especially troubling is that there appears to have been no advance notice to local government, airport leadership, or even local Air Traffic Control or local military leadership. If El Paso International Airport has to close for 10 days, the economic hit to El Paso could be $40-50 million or more. I will continue pushing for answers and will share updates in the comments on this post as soon as I am able. Follow @flyelp on instagram for official updates directly from the El Paso International Airport.

One of my goals this year is getting better at CSS. I joke that my CSS skills peaked in 2015. But CSS has gained a ton of new, really cool things and browser support has been moving quickly compared the days of old.

This talk by Dylan Beattie from NDC London 2026 is a great introduction to what CSS is capable of these days.

I’m also slowly working through a course called CSS for JavaScript Developers by Josh Comeau, which is fantastically done.
