All the tech news blogs are publishing Anthropic's unsubstantiated claims of a Chinese hack, again.

Zero of these outlets are making readers aware that Anthropic has every motivation to lie or mislead the public about AI models that directly threaten its business model by proving you don't need the cloud to run these services.

Even though security experts have repeatedly called BS on Anthropic's claims, the media are running with the narrative and omitting key context.

i am wondering the degree to which this happened

this fits a known species of critihype - "the ai fucked up so hard, imagine how cool it'll be when it doesn't"

I don't care what tools you use. Whether your use is ethical or not is not my business, it's yours, and it is your conscience you'll have to clear. I used to be a gatekeeping elitist prick who judged people who used software I disliked. I try not to be one anymore.

But - and this is a very, very big but - if the tools you use only exist because they're scraping and DDoSing the entire internet, and the cost of their existence is externalized to me, and everyone else running a website?

Then I will care, and I will call you out on your bullshit if you try to present yourself as an ally, while making excuses for the damage these things cause.

This is not about ethics. This is not about copyright, or rights in general. This is about externalizing costs to people who do not deserve this level of abuse, and then denying their complaints.

Everyone loves not having to have a license to develop and release code but the argument for stronger controls on who gets to do surgery on the core infrastructures of our digital society is getting stronger by the day.

The most popular "AI" coding CLIs seem to be *very* buggy - especially Claude Code. Thousands of open issues.

It's also probably very insecure.

It’s a small detail in this thread, but it’s utterly bonkers that we’ve elevated cars over *freedom of assembly*, a right literally in the Constitution. One of the ultimate symbols of car-brained America.
