I'll also never ever understand the impulse to blame the party with the least amount of power.
When something like the Proton scandal makes its rounds on the internet, the discourse inevitably devolves into this debate over whether the victim is to blame.
Like, what's to be gained?! Why defend a system that would happily devour you if it meant someone is making money? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!

The wackiness of the Californian Ideology aside, the Proton scandal is a great example of why we shouldn't judge people too hard for the tools they use.
We have literal privacy advocates defending Proton's actions, presumably just because they don't want to stop using Proton, but want to continue judging others for the software they use.
If you place too heavy a burden on the morality of software usage, you'll turn yourself into a hypocrite everytime.

I will never understand the large swaths of the FOSS community who believe social justice has nothing to do with their advocacy.
The Californian Ideology is littered with contradictions like this and it blows my mind. It's like they go out of their way to make sure they don't accidentally help someone who actually needs help.
Obviously, not everyone in the community is like this. But its enough to make your head spin.

Just got word from @patrickbrosset that the Edge Top Developer Needs dashboard has been updated for 2026:
https://microsoftedge.github.io/TopDeveloperNeeds/
This follows from the launch of Interop '26, and plugs gaps the selection process leaves due to silent, unaccountable vetoes.
It goes without saying that this shouldn't be necessary. No web developer should have to guess who is on their side, and who demands secrecy while holding the web back. @owa's 2024 piece remains sadly relevant:

I am most interested in the hobby sites, made my non-professional web devs. The ones you code away at in your spare time. Preferably static, but share anyway if it's not. And if you're a pro and have a personal hobby site, share away too! The more the merrier.Even if I already know your site, share anyway because there might be people who do not have come across it yet.

There's this attitude on the left from people who believe they're the "good" kind of protestors. And that if they follow all the rules and be polite that they're exempt from state retaliation.
I saw a post here weeks ago that defended RSVPing to protests, saying "we should put our names on every list we can," and it's like no. No you shouldn't. If you believe that then you have a deep misunderstanding of our situation. Cops aren't carving out exceptions for the hall monitors of the resistance.

it is incredibly validating to me that prominent foss people who for decades embodied and reinforced the false idea that "all that matters is code" are now predictably falling into the LLM slop fad because, surprise fucking surprise, they never gave a single shit about people and simply rode the movement to have a space where they could whitewash their morality-unencumbered nonsense.

And forget Proton for a minute, as despicable as their actions are.
The FBI is using a 3 year old incident that ultimately led to the murder of a protester, as grounds for collecting private data from someone who's only connection to that incident is that they also oppose Cop City.
This is why I wince whenever I see photos of protesters posted to social media, or people RSVPing to protests. Our government considers you domestic terrorists no matter how much you "follow the rules".

If you're working on something of this sort, you can DM if you need more info.
One of the biggest obstacles was the threat of actually good programs being de-funded because of the way Hochul/ NYS bundles mass surveillance with other programs in grant allocations.
This threat ended up not being real, but it almost torpedoed the whole thing last minute.

Correction on one point: APD did claim an officer was shot. That officer was never identified nor the story corroborated.
There was a video circulating at the time of officers near the murder claiming it was friendly fire. And still, no gun powder found on victim's hands.
Also, I made an edit to reflect Tortuguita's correct pronouns (they/them).

@fromjason 1) tortugita used they/them pronouns 2) a cop definitely was shot, not sure where you got the idea that the cops didn't claim this. Whether it was friendly fire from the cops or self defense from an attempted kidnapping on the part of tortugita is unknown. I for one honor tortugita's memory, even if they didn't shoot that pig
